Best Places to Eat in Moorea…on a Budget!

Posted in Articles | by

French Polynesia can be expensive, but you don’t have to break the bank while on vacation. It is possible to eat well in Moorea, even on a budget. Do keep in mind that hours vary, and many smaller restaurants only accept cash. (Have local currency available.) Dress is casual, at least wherever we dine. Here are some of the the best places to eat in Moorea…on a budget!

6 Best Moorea Restaurants for Families

1. Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

Yes, it is possible to eat for less at the Hilton resort restaurants. Located directly on the beach, Rotui Bar & Grill serves gigantic portions so two adults can easily share a dish. Kids meals are available at a reasonable price, and the Eimeo bar offers a two-for-one drink special during Happy Hour. Crepes at the Toatea bar are not exorbitantly priced, and where else can you dine and watch nurse sharks at the same time? Conveniently most Hilton restaurant menus are posted as PDFs on the resort’s web site. Special meal plans for kids are also available.

2. Allo Pizza

About 15 minutes away from the Hilton in gorgeous Cook’s Bay, you will pass a little gem called Allo Pizza. This popular eatery will deliver fresh personal-sized pizzas to the Hilton, but you can also dine roadside. Most of the seating is at a bar where you can watch your pizza being made. Sodas, water and juice are served, but no alcohol. In addition to thin-crust pizza with a dizzying choice of toppings, you can choose among several salads. Pizzas are quite large, and one pizza can easily feed two kids. Also, take note that Allo Pizza uses gruyere cheese on most of their pizzas, but they do have mozzarella and are happy to substitute if that’s your preference.

3. Les Tipaniers

Les Tipaniers was one of the first restaurants we tried in Moorea, and we still talk about the homemade Tahitian vanilla ice cream. In addition to tasty ice cream, this cozy restaurant offers delicious pizzas, pastas and fresh seafood, along with live musical entertainment on some nights. Ask the concierge to reserve your table, and if you don’t have a car, the restaurant will provide free transfers. Most of the diners are French guests.

Delicious, fairly priced seafood is one reason why Les Tipaniers is one of the best Moorea restaurants for families on a budget.

4. Le Motu Pizzeria

We have never had the pizza, but the crepes and pasta are freshly prepared and well-priced. Service was warm and friendly, but be warned that people are allowed to smoke in the outdoor patio. This quiet spot is located about 20 to 25 minutes away from the Hilton in the village of Haapiti.

5. Patrick Poulet

Food trucks are ubiquitous in French Polynesia, and Moorea is lucky to have Patrick Poulet selling mouth-watering rotisserie chicken (whole and as sandwiches), as well as tabbouleh, roasted potatoes and a few other dishes. We love this chicken and spent the first three days of our last trip fearing that we would never find the food truck. The friendly Frenchman, who was an executive chef at a local resort and has also lived and work in the U.S., sets up shop around lunchtime by Cook’s Bay and in the afternoon close to the airport. You will see his truck from the road. Tell him that the family from Austin, Texas says hello!

6. Manuia Grill

This spot is a permanent food truck across street from Moorea Pearl Resort serving affordable plates of BBQ steaks, chicken, fish and pork with choice of fries, rice and salad. Cost is about $20 per person. The food is very fresh, and patrons are mostly locals with some tourists venturing from across the street. Our delightful waitress spoke impeccable English, and the outdoor spot is extremely kid-friendly.

What are your picks for the best Moorea restaurants? Bon appetit!
