4 Travel Apps to Find Kid-Friendly Spots on the Go

Posted in Tips | by

You’ve been driving for hours headed for the next destination on your latest road trip adventure when the calls begin from the back of the car.

“Mom, I’m hungry!”

“Johnny won’t stop bugging me!”

“Amy is looking at me!”

“I need to go to the bathroom!”

Don’t panic, there are some simple ways to obtain Serenity Now. Check out these four travel apps which will help you find kid-friendly restaurants, playgrounds, parks and other spots where the kids can blow off some steam, you can tend to their needs, and save your sanity at the same time. We even tested them for you!

Trekaroo

Trekaroo’s iPhone App offers recommendations of kid-friendly attractions, restaurants, and hotels on the go. Assembled by travel savvy families and local parents, you can also contribute your best finds.

Review: This app was so easy to use. In one click, we had access to a great resource for finding family-friendly activities at home or while traveling in an unfamiliar place. Search for restaurants with kids menus and changing tables. Use it to plan ahead for your next destination on an epic road trip and add your sage tips, advice, and reviews to that of other parents who visited before you. Add your own ideas for points of interests and complete reviews so that other families can benefit from your expertise!

Gogobot

Find events, restaurants and attractions at places near and far. Create postcards to share with friends. The Gogobot app even tracks the weather in your favorite location so you’ll know what to wear as you head out to exciting new destinations!

Review: Our favorite Gogobot feature is that along with places to stay and eat, it offers awesome lists of things to do and breaks them down for visitors by providing descriptions of the locations and activities, as well as reviews from other travelers. With everything from golf courses to museums, zoos and parks, Gogobot makes it easy to make family entertainment and food decisions on the go!

Gogobot also allows users to level-up from a Tourist to a Scout by providing just one 75-word review. From there, users can earn Gogobot badges and even virtual trophies based on your reviews about the places that you have visited!

RoadTrippers

The RoadTrippers app will not only help you plan your trip, it also offers great suggestions along the way. Their database of over one million places includes everything from diners to drive-ins and and even some random roadside attractions. It is also a source for finding great kid-friendly restaurants and parks.

Review: RoadTrippers is a great tool for planning out a road trip or activities at your destination by providing specific details about locations, photos and reviews. It also allows you to connect to your favorite navigation app by automatically syncing trip routes and saved locations.

Our favorite feature about RoadTrippers is that they also offer users an awesome RoadTrippers website which can be used along with the mobile app to maximize your trip planning capabilities.

Foodspotting

This visual guide to good food is filled with recommendations made by Foodspotters who snap photos of their food and tap, “Loved it!” The Foodspotting app is arranged by dishes rather than restaurants. So if you’re looking for spaghetti in St. Paul or dumplings in Des Moines, using the photographs can be a pretty quick and easy way to gain consensus among the family.

Review: This app is easy to use and quick to download. We love that it actually offers up real recommendations from real people, and includes photos so that you can see what the dish will look like. Even better, it will let you know that the amazing key lime pie pictured is just 2.3 miles from your current location.

The app doesn’t have a great selection in all areas yet, but we expect that will change as the app catches on. The images aren’t always high quality because they are taken by actual customers, but we feel like they provide a more realistic look at the food because they are not doctored or enhanced.

Foodspotting also allows you to follow your favorite “food spotters.” You can also set notifications to receive updates from those that you follow, and you can even follow certain locations and specific dishes.

Editor’s note: Some of these apps may allow you to book hotels online, but you will always enjoy the most benefits from booking directly using our Hilton Honors app or Hilton.com. Hilton also offers a Best Rate Guarantee — if you find a published rate that’s lower than what’s available directly from Hilton, we’ll match it and give you an additional $50.
