10 Tips to Make the Most of Your Vacation Food Budget
If you are reading this article, most likely you enjoy travel as much as I do and find that the more tips you have to save money then the more trips you can take. Travel can be costly, but if you plan accordingly you can save money on food in some very simple ways.
How to Save Money on Food While Traveling
1. Avoid Trendy Restaurants
Sure, it’s fun to see some of these establishments, but a meal can break the bank if you haven’t dedicated a large portion of your vacation budget to food. If there is a particular restaurant that I really want to try and don’t want to spend the money for the entire dinner, we opt to dine somewhere less expensive and have dessert a the trendy place.
2. Plan a Picnic
Visit a local grocery store and treat yourself and your family to a fun picnic. You can purchase items that your children will love and will fill them up. Splurge on a special treat that you may not buy at home. By having a picnic, you are also free to play at the park, beach, zoo, or wherever you may be.
3. Order Pizza
It sounds crazy, but one of my absolute favorite things to do when we travel is order pizza, grab some soft drinks and a bottle of wine, and find somewhere unique to people watch and enjoy our pizza party. My favorite place is on a beach blanket listening to the waves.
4. Look for Coupons
Local newspapers, websites and the hotel front desk or concierge can offer you some suggestions.
5. Shop for Snacks
Again, visit the local grocery store and find some snacks to keep in your room. Tip: Be nice to the housekeeping staff by opting for non-messy items, and be nice to your neighbors by NOT burning popcorn in your room.
6. Carry snacks when flying
Airport food can be expensive. Pack nonperishable snacks in your carry-on bag to save money.
7. Book Hotels with Free Breakfast
Several Hilton hotel brands offer fabulous free breakfast options that are included in your room rates. Plus Gold Hilton Honors members can choose to have complimentary continental breakfast in their My Way selections at many of the hotel brands, and the same breakfast is always included for Diamond members.
8. Order Food Wisely
Realize that soft drinks, appetizers and bottles of wine are going to add to your overall meal costs. Stick with ice water and splurge for an ice cream cone later.
9. Consider a Fabulous Late Lunch over Dinner
Many times you can enjoy the same entrees at lunch with slightly smaller portions and lower prices.
10. Ask Locals where They Eat
This is my absolute favorite tip. Locals will know where to find the best food and the best prices, plus you get to experience the local culture.
