New Hilton Honors Credit Cards Are Here!

Posted in Tips | by

Things are shaking up in the credit card world. American Express and Hilton have teamed up as exclusive partners with new Hilton Honors co-branded credit cards. American Express is now the exclusive issuer of the Hilton Honors credit card program, with four cards: Hilton Honors American Express Card, Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card, Hilton Honors American Express Business Card and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.

What You Need to Know About the New Hilton Honors Credit Cards

Citibank Cards Have Converted to American Express Cards

Citibank’s card agreement with Hilton has expired. On January 30, Citi Hilton Honors Visa Card accounts converted to the the no-fee Hilton Honors American Express Card. Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Card accounts converted to the Hilton Honors Ascend Card. The Ascend Card includes the same $95 yearly fee as the Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Card.

Because each new AmEx card has a different account number than the previous Citi card, you will need to update this information with any merchants you use for recurring automatic payments, such as a utility provider, mobile phone provider, etc.

As a bonus, both of the above AmEx cards feature no foreign transaction fees! That’s excellent news if you used your previous card while traveling overseas. Those pesky fees could really add up!

If you have any authorized users on your account, they will also receive a new card. The new card(s) should have been mailed to the primary account holder’s address on file with Citi. To avoid any embarrassment, you should let your authorized users know their previous Citi cards will no longer work.

What is truly exciting with this exclusive partnership are the benefits and value cardholders will receive going forward. With the addition of two AmEx cards into the portfolio, loyal Hilton members will have a total of four credit cards to choose from, each offering a variety of benefits and the ability to earn more points in the Hilton program. Personally, I am a long-time point collector and the ability to earn more points per dollar really gets me excited!

What does this mean for current Citi Hilton Honors cardholders?

Applying for credit cards can be stressful. It’s also a well-known fact your credit score can go down when a merchant even peeks at your credit report. Don’t worry, this switch should be seamless for current Citi Visa cardholders. All active Citi card members in good standing will automatically transition to the equivalent AmEx card without having to reapply or have their credit reports accessed.

That’s good news and kudos to both companies for keeping it simple! By now, all Citi Hilton Honors cardholders should have received both emails and postal mails about the transition and have their new AmEx cards in hand. The new cards became available to use on January 30, 2018.

What will happen to my balance on my Citi Hilton Honors Card?

Any unpaid balance will automatically transfer to your new account with American Express on January 30, 2018. I recommend you carefully check your statement to make sure payments were credited correctly during the transition process.

What did NOT change with the AmEx acquisition?

1) Your Hilton Honors account number will remain the same.

2) If you have an account balance, it was automatically transferred to the new account.

3) If you have authorized users, they were also automatically transferred to the new account.

4) Your credit line should remain the same.

5) If you earned weekend night rewards with your Citi Reserve, you will be able to redeem them as you would normally do.

As I mentioned earlier, both companies are working to make this as seamless as possible for the consumer. The most annoying part of the merger will be perhaps entering a new credit card number into your computer’s autofill payment lines or changing recurring payments. The new benefits and value of the AmEx cards will certainly outweigh any disruption you encounter.

What cards are now offered in the American Express and Hilton credit card portfolio?

With savvy consumers in mind, American Express and Hilton have upgraded their suite of credit cards to offer an impressive array of benefits and value. All cards in the portfolio include the removal of foreign transaction fees and are linked to Hilton’s award-winning guest loyalty program!

Note: All Citi Hilton Honors card members transferring to a new AmEx card will not be eligible for any sign-up bonus. For more information on sign-up bonuses check out American Express Hilton Honors Cards.
