Helpful Domestic Travel Apps

Posted in Tips | by

As a Mom who acts as our family Travel Director, I’m always looking for tools and solutions to make our travels easier and smoother and our experiences more memorable. I often turn to apps on my iPhone as a cheap (many times free) and easy resource.  Here is a sampling of my favorite travel apps when it comes to domestic travel.

Free Travel Apps

TripIt Travel Organizer

Store and access all your travel plans in one place for peace of mind when traveling. Forward your confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com and they are instantly recognized and saved to an itinerary on your iPhone or your iPad. The app was awarded the “Best Travel Mobile App” by the Webby Awards in 2011.

Google Maps

No longer preloaded on your iPhone, this app offers a much more user-friendly and detailed option for navigation.

AroundMe

How many times have you found yourself looking for the nearest gas station, ATM, pharmacy, grocery store or a movie theater when traveling to another city and state? This fast, easy and accurate app quickly identifies your position and allows you to find out information about your surroundings by showing you a list of business in the category you have selected along with the distance from where you are. For every listing you can also see its location on a map.

OpenTable

Make instant, confirmed restaurant reservations at over 20,000 restaurants in the US and Canada. Search by city or name and then enter date, time and party size to see all available tables in real time. Tap on the one you want and you are all set! Another great benefit… members earn dining points to pay for meals at any OpenTable restaurant.

Groupon

This app is not just for your local neighborhood. Don’t forget to search for local deals when you’re away from home!

Skype

This one probably needs no introduction. Stay in touch with family and friends with an instant message, voice or video call, all for free.

Instagram

80 million users love Instagram! While I use it every day, not just for traveling, it is especially cool for travel photos as it allows you to transform average photos into works of art you can’t wait to share with friends and family. Choose from 19 different filters to enhance and customize your photo, write a description and post away. It’s free, fun and simple!

Overdrive Media

Download free ibooks and audio books from your local library for keeping the kids entertained during road trips.

Recommended Inexpensive Travel App

FlightTrack – Live Flight Status Tracker by Mobiata ($4.99)

This useful app lets you check flight status, gate information, flight delays or cancellations and more. The flight sharing email lets your friends and family track your flight online. If you upgrade to FlightTrack Pro ($9.99), you can also sync your TripIt itineraries, receive push alerts and predict delays.
