Best Pool Gear for Kids
It’s the height of summer so you’re probably hitting the pool or beach with the kids sometime soon. When we’re not traveling, my kids are on swim team, and we’re at the pool several times per week. Here are the must-have items that will be in my pool bag this year.
Hanna Andersson swimwear
I swear by Hanna Andersson for swimwear because their bathing suites are UPF 50+, and the fabrics stay bright and pill free throughout a summer of chlorine and salt. The cuts are age appropriate with colorful styles and prints that both kids and parents can agree upon. For boy’s suits, they offer two lengths in a quick dry fabric: a board short and a slightly above the knee length that my son prefers.
Did you know that not all sunscreens are created equal? Each year the Environmental Working Group evaluates sun care products and compiles a list of sunscreens that are free of oxybenzone which can disrupt the hormone system and retinyl palmitate, which may speed skin tumors and lesions in sun exposed skin. The EWG is not a fan of spray sunscreens because they can be inhaled and don’t cover the skin completely.
We selected several from the EWG website last year, and we really liked Alba Botanica Very Emollient Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 and Babyganics Mineral-Based Sunscreen, SPF 50+. Both went on easily, had a non-greasy feel, and prevented burns on our fair skin.
Before my son was on swim team, I must have spent $50 per summer on replacing swim goggles with broken straps, eyepieces that wouldn’t hold a seal, etc. For competitive swimming, I bought a pair of Speedo Jr. Vanquisher goggles (three years ago) and we still have them! Even if your kids just like to use goggles for swim play like dive sticks or taking underwater pictures, these goggles can take the wear and tear of kids and have replaceable parts that you can buy in the event that one of the components wears out. The only reason that you would have to buy new would be losing them!
Havaianas are really the most classic and comfortable flip flop ever. Everyone in my family has a pair, and they are a must-have to hit the pool or beach. They may look like the dollar store variety, but they hold their shape and stay comfortable all summer long. They are also great to pack for vacation because they don’t take up much room in your bag.
