Get Your Best Family Vacation Pictures Ever!

Posted in Tips | by

So you’ve just returned from a fabulous family vacation, and you can’t wait to share your adventures with family and friends. You’ve taken a whole bunch of pictures and you are poised to post! Except…those “selfies” don’t always work for a family; think missing heads and closed eyes. And those photos taken with your camera phone handed to random strangers can turn out fuzzy or missing the iconic background.

Even though I love photography, in the midst of the moment, I’ve suffered the same disappointment many times myself. So when a good friend of mine who leads travel tours around the world showed us her stunning travel photos, I was totally jealous!

Then she shared her secret: Flytographer, an ingenious service that provides vacationers with one of over 300 local professional photographers in 160 cities around the world to capture those amazing pictures you always dreamed of taking home.

My friend told me how easy it is to book your personal family photo shoot, and how much fun it would be. Because the photographers are local, they can help determine the best time and place for you perfect shoot. As a bonus, they will also provide tips for things to see and do while you are in their hometown.

The idea sounded great to me! And I was sure that many of my Hilton Mom Voyage readers would feel the same was so I was ready to book our shoot.

HOW Flytographer WORKS

I contacted Flytographer and they assigned me a personal “Shoot Concierge” to help us arrange the time, place and location of the shoot. Together, we discussed choice of photographers and packages. Flytographer offers several packages which vary in price (starting at $250) and amount of session time. Then, my Shoot Concierge emailed me to finalize every detail, learn about my family, determine what type of pictures I wanted, and initiate discussions between me and my photographer. The exchange was very professional and friendly.

Flytographer invited us to try their services on two very different types of vacation locales: one in bustling, chaotic New York City and the other on a gorgeous secluded beach on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island.

The Times Square Shoot – LIGHTS, CAMERA & ACTION

Our expert photographer Johnny’s warmth and excitement immediately put us at ease. We had a tall order for Johnny in a short amount of time. We wanted action shots smack dab in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Times Square and also glamour shots in front of a Broadway Theater.

Not only did Johnny accomplish this, but his fun, professional approach helped us keep our cool in the midst of all that was going on around us. His skillful eye produced pictures that captured the buzz of the city AND highlighted the expressions of my beautiful little “stars.” We had so much fun walking through Times Square and enjoying ourselves, we almost forgot about Johnny candidly capturing our every interaction.

The Hawaii Shoot – ALOHA TO A PICTURE PERFECT PARADISE

While every moment in Hawaii was glorious, our Flytographer shoot was certainly one of the highlights! Here in Hawaii, Flytogapher paired us with the super-talented Chelsea, a native of Kona and resident of Oahu, who frequently flies between the islands to photograph her clients.

We met Chelsea at the “magic hour,” right before the sun prepared to dip into the ocean. From the moment we met, Chelsea’s free-spirited nature had us all laughing. She definitely got us in the mood. We splashed. We romped in the warm ocean water. We balanced on lava rocks. The girls swung from ropes! And Chelsea didn’t stop shooting until the last ray of sun melted into the ocean. And even when the sun was just a blip on the horizon, she captured our figures in silhouette. Chelsea made this photo shoot an unforgettable highlight of our week on the Big Island.

After the shoot

Within just five business days of each shoot, Flytographer provided us with a link to an online gallery to download all of our high-resolution pictures. These photos are our very favorite souvenirs from both our NYC and Hawaii trips. We immediately printed them out, and then we excitedly shared them with our friends and family on Facebook and Instagram. We loved the photos so much we just ordered canvas versions of some of our favorites to hang in our house.

Both of our Flytographer experiences were great and a real trip highlights! And more than ever before, we were able to capture the essence of what our vacations are all about: the joy of our family exploring a new location together.

HINTS FOR YOUR FLYTOGRAPHER SHOOT

1. Choose colors that are coordinated but not “matchy-matchy” outfits!

2. Spend some time primping and preening before the shoot. This is your chance to be a star and get those pictures that will end up on your holiday cards, be posted on Facebook and become cherished family relics. While not necessary, it can be fun to book a salon appointment on your vacation before the shoot, especially when you’ve been spending time in a chlorinated pool or walking in the rain.

As part of our girls’ weekend in New York City, my daughters and I spent a yummy morning at the recently opened, bright and cheery Milk and Cookies Kids Spa and Salon which specializes in Mommy & Me packages. My girls enjoyed the dual pleasure of munching on warm cookies and flavored milk and watching movies while getting their hair beautifully coifed for our shoot. For our Hawaii shoot, the friendly and talented staff at the serene Kohala Spa at Hilton Waikoloa Village primped us to be ready to strut our stuff!

3. Arrive early to the shoot so you’ll all be ready to go (hair brushed, lipstick applied) when your Flytographer arrives.

4. Be clear about exactly what you want, and don’t be shy. This is your shoot! Tell them if you prefer candids, posed shots or a mix. If you want a picture just of your kids or you and your spouse cuddling, tell the Flytographer.

5. Most importantly, let loose and have fun! Don’t worry about posing; these photographers will capture the feeling of the experience. Laugh, smile, hug, kiss and be yourselves. You are on vacation — let that show and be a star!
