5 Fun Sedona Attractions for Families

Posted in Articles | by

During our recent visit to Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock, we found it easy and enjoyable to break up activities with hikes. Although this article isn’t just about places to hike, there are plenty of hiking trails in Sedona at all levels of difficulty. Here are five fun day trips to Sedona attractions, with just a little bit of hiking mixed in.

What to do in Sedona, AZ with Kids

1. Red Rock State Park

In order to satisfy different levels of hikers in our family, we chose places where the hiking could be blended into other activities. If you have a similar situation, you may enjoy visiting Red Rock State Park. The park offers a five-mile network of trails in varying degrees of difficulty which provide visitors views of the riparian forest contrasted against the beautiful red rocks.

There is also a visitor center with several hands-on exhibits just for kids. For those kids in need of some screen time, there is also an air-conditioned movie theater with two looping movies about the area.

If you’re wondering what to do in Sedona, AZ with kids, Oak Creek can be enjoyed at Red Rock State Park.

2. Slide Rock State Park

Located seven miles outside of Sedona in Oak Creek Canyon is the popular Slide Rock State Park. For $10 to $30 per car (depending on time of year), visitors can picnic on the creek bank and slide down the slippery rock. The water was very cold the day that we visited, but that did not stop our kids from enjoying this natural slide.

As a state run park, there are basic bathrooms available. If you forget to bring a towel or footwear, there is a gift shop on site that has everything from snacks to swimsuits. I have heard that the parking lot fills up quickly, so consider visiting early morning or late afternoon.

3. Little Horse Trail

This one is all about hiking. It’s a well-marked trail right off of highway 179 and there is a small parking lot. This easy trail travels 2.2 miles to Chicken Point, with spectacular views of the red rock formations along the way. You can also see the Chapel of the Holy Cross, one of the top things to do in Sedona, from several vantage points along the trail. There is even a trail that intersects with Little Horse Trail that leads to the chapel, if you’d like a longer hike. We saw a variety of beautiful desert flowers, a garter snake and a rabbit during our walk.

4. Verde Valley Winery Tour

Although the adults would have liked to have spent the whole day touring the Sedona wineries, we had the kids with us. So, we decided to make everyone happy by choosing two wineries that were close to other attractions.

The Javelina Leap Winery and the Oak Creek Vineyards are right next door to each other. We enjoyed tasting different wines at each, while our kids snacked on the cheese and chocolate boards. These tasting rooms are located in Cornville (20 minutes outside Sedona), just across the street from a fish hatchery and bird sanctuary. It was a lovely place to walk and look at the fish before heading back into Sedona.

5. Dead Horse Ranch State Park

If your kids want someone else to do the walking, you can head to Dead Horse Ranch State Park to do some horseback riding. Trail Horse Adventures offers different horseback rides of varying lengths for very reasonable prices. There is even a package that includes a barbecue dinner and cowboy show.
