Walk the High Line in New York City with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Within a few blocks of Hilton New York Fashion District, you can find the High Line, one of the loveliest and most unique parks I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t visit New York City without visiting this park. The park is a narrow strip, built on elevated train tracks no longer in use. The combination of landscaping and art will keep you and your children entranced throughout the walk.

The High Line Park Entrance

The High Line runs from W 34th Street to Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. Stop by the Concierge Desk at the hotel, where the concierge will happily give you a city map and highlight the route from the hotel to the High Line. From Hilton Fashion District, we’ve always climbed up to the park from the W 30th Street entrance, which is the closest to the hotel.

Highlights of a High Line Walking Tour

Once you’ve climbed up to the park, definitely head to the right, where the High Line curves along the Hudson River, with a cute play area for kids and stunning views of the river. This is the beginning of the High Line from the northern side, and it has a very open and breezy feel to it as it runs along the river.

Backtrack to continue south on the High Line. You’ll find many places to stop and enjoy the park, including several overlooks onto the city. For example, when you cross over 26th Street, you’ll find a simple overlook with a large bench where you can stretch out and view the city. Likewise at 10th Street, you’ll find another overlook, this one larger with views of the Hudson River.

There is an abundance of art along the High Line, with different exhibits over time, so you’ll see something new each time you visit. Check out the map of the art along the High Line for their current art installations. There are also many events and tours along the High Line throughout the year which you can view in their online calendar of events to see what coincides with your visit.

The High Line New York City - Art on the High Line Walking Tour

The unique art is one of the highlights on the High Line walking tour in New York City.

If you’re looking for a snack, stay on the High Line and hold out for 15th Street, where you’ll find Chelsea Market. Except for during the coldest months, you’ll find food carts and an outdoor café. Or at the southernmost part of the High Line, you can exit into the Meatpacking District, where there are many restaurants from which to choose.

High Line Park Hours

The High Line is just under 1 1/2 miles from start to finish and opens every day at 7 am; closing hours vary depending on the season: 7 pm in the winter months, 11 pm in the summer, and 10 pm in the spring and fall. From the southern end of the High Line, you’ll have about a one-mile walk back to Hilton Fashion District. I think a stop by Doughnut Plant on W 23rd Street is in order after an urban hike.
