Visit Lake Como, Italy with Kids
Located in the foothills of the Alps in Northern Italy, Lake Como is a romantic destination. Charming villages surround the picturesque lake making it a favorite vacation spot. Lake Como might not seem like it should be on the top of the list for a family vacation, but it is not to be missed! My family’s time in Lake Como was one of our favorites. Here is how to visit Lake Como, Italy with kids.
Getting from Milan to Lake Como by Train
The train is the easiest way to get to Lake Como. From the Milan Central Train Station, located near Hilton Milan, take the train to Varenna-Esino. Exit the train at Varenna. Check train schedules on the Trenitalia website. There is no need to book tickets in advance. It is a regional train so there is no assigned seating. We purchased our tickets at the station right before departure. The train takes about one hour from Milan to Varenna.
Alternatively, if you are staying at Hilton Lake Como, you could take the regional train from Milan to the Como San Giovanni train station.
What to do in Lake Como, Italy
Many visitors walk straight through Varenna down to the ferry to go to Bellagio. I do not recommend this. Varenna was our favorite part of Lake Como! It is not crowded and there is so much to explore. My kids were excited as they discovered the little stone streets and pathways in Varenna.
Walk towards the town square for child-friendly outdoor cafés. We had the perfect Italian meal at Albergo Del Sole. Kids will find many things they like on the menu and parents will enjoy taking in the atmosphere.
After lunch, head downhill to the water. Varenna has a stunning path along the lake filled with more cafés and shops. Take the path all the way to the ferry dock. There is a playground for the kids to enjoy while waiting for the ferry.
Take the ferry to Bellagio, the most popular town on Lake Como. Bellagio is busier than Varenna but so beautiful. Take the kids though the little streets up the hill and find possibly the best gelato in Italy. Try the Kinder or the Toblerone flavor at Gelateria del Borgo. My kids were so content with their ice cream that I was able to fit in extra shopping time. When it is time to leave, simply take the ferry back to Varenna and take the next train back to Milan.
Or, to get to Hilton Lake Como from Bellagio, you can take a fast hydrofoil ferry which will take about 40 to 50 minutes or a slow cruising ferry which will take about two hours. You can find the ferry schedules here.
