7 Favorite Vienna, Austria Attractions for Families
1. Schonbrunn Palace
Schonbrunn Palace was the Imperial family’s summer residence from the 1700s until 1918. Royal family members such as Marie Antionette grew up here or visited here. The palace is enormous with 1,441 rooms, but a guided tour or audio tour will give you an idea of the highlights in a kid-friendly way. Also on the property is a children’s museum great for younger kids and a theater where we saw a brief marionette show. One of the best parts of our visit was walking through and getting lost in the garden maze next to the palace.
2. St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Catacombs
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a landmark church and one of the most recognizable buildings in Vienna. Besides exploring the intricate cathedral and side chapels, you can also venture below the building to the catacombs which were once a burial place for church cardinals, Austrian royalty and even common folk who died from the Black Plague.
3. Vienna Prater
It’s hard to believe that in the middle of the city there is a fabulous kid-friendly amusement park! Vienna Prater is the oldest amusement park in the world and has over 250 rides and attractions so be sure to plan some time to enjoy. One of the best known rides is the Riesenrad, a giant Ferris wheel that takes about 20 minutes and offers a leisurely and impressive view of the city. For adventure seeking kids, there are roller coasters and high speed extreme rides and swings. There is no admission price and you buy tickets to use for the rides you are interested in.
4. Time Travel Vienna
Time Travel Vienna is a fun, interactive, slightly touristy but very entertaining way to get an overview of Vienna. You are transported through time through activities like a 4-D movie, a music experience and sitting in a recreated WWII bunker during an aircraft attack. It only takes about an hour, but you and your family will get information on everything from the attack of Turks on Vienna, Mozart, Austrian Royalty, and World War II. We thought this was a great way to keep the kids engaged.
5. Danube Island
Danube Island is a man-made island built in the Danube River to protect Vienna from the high waters. It is a pretty, recreational area where people ride bikes and rent paddle boats. There is even a beach area where families can relax, play beach volleyball and swim in the river. For families with active kids it’s a great way to take a break from sightseeing.
6. Haus Der Musik
Haus Der Musik (House of Music) is an interactive museum well suited for kids. All the exhibits are related to music or famous musicians and composers including Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. For a special experience, kids can “conduct” the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
7. Denmel Cafe
For a delicious lunch and extraordinary pastries check out Denmel Cafe. They offer simple cold sandwiches and salads, brunch dishes and schnitzel along with the finest Austrian pastries. One of the best parts of this restaurant is that you can watch the pastry chefs through glass windows in the back.
