4 Must-See Attractions in Nassau, Bahamas
With temperatures dropping and winter’s blustery arrival, the Bahamas offers travelers an escape to pristine white sand beaches and turquoise blue water, as well as a chance to reconnect with family. A short flight from most east coast airports, this Caribbean paradise showcases amazing food, entertainment and the nicest people.
And the best part of the Bahamas? We loved staying at the absolutely beautiful British Colonial Hilton Nassau, the only beachfront hotel in downtown Nassau with a private beach, freshwater swimming pool, amazing views and easy access to city attractions.
4 Fun Things to do in Nassau, Bahamas with Kids
Also known as “Fish Fry” to the locals, Arawak Cay is THE destination to get authentic Bahamian food. This restaurant strip right by the water offers fried everything with a great view. You’ll find several restaurants with hosting staff outside trying to entice you with their food. Each of the restaurants offers similar fare, but I recommend eating at Goldies or Twin Brothers restaurant. Either way you really can’t go wrong! Once inside, order conch fritters, conch salad, a sky juice and Kalik Gold beer. You will thank me!
Queen’s Staircase or 66 steps
The staircase is an awe-inspiring landmark hewed out of solid limestone rock by freed slaves to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 66-year rule and the end of British slavery. Once you climb the stairs, you have a great view of the ocean, as well as the harbor with all the incoming cruise ships. There is no admission required to see and walk up the stairs. At the top, there is an opportunity to visit Fort Fincastle Historic Complex, which requires a ticket to enter.
Historical downtown Nassau Harbour
If you are in more of a shopping mood, take a leisurely walk through the cobblestone streets of downtown Nassau. Find your perfect souvenir at Bay Street Straw Market or one of the many boutiques that range from high-end to duty-free to inexpensive shopping.
National Art Gallery of the Bahamas
This art gallery showcases notable Bahamian artists in a restored 19th century mansion with beautiful Bahamian views. The National Art Gallery displays beautiful masterpieces and offers artisanal crafts and wares for purchase. The “From Columbus to Junkanoo” exhibit is on display through February 2017 and highlights the growth and divergence of Bahamian art through the past century. Expect to pay a $10 tourist admission fee and visit the gallery website for additional information.
Whether enjoying water activities or local attractions, your family will find plenty of fun things to do in the Bahamas to create lasting memories on your Caribbean getaway.
