Exploring Milan with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Milan is a popular airport when traveling to southern Europe. Airfares to Milan tend to cost less than to other cities, but many travelers do not take the time to explore Milan. My family stayed in Milan for three nights and we were glad we did. Here are some suggestions for exploring Milan with kids.

Where to Stay in Milan

Milan has an excellent transportation system. Stay near a station stop and transportation for the family will be easy. We also recommend staying near Central Train Station. Trains to other cities in Europe all leave from here. My family stayed at Hilton Milan which is located next to the Central Train Station and subway stops.

Fun Things to do in Milan with Kids

Duomo di Milano

Pictured at the top of this article, the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest cathedrals in the world, is an attraction that kids will enjoy. Tour the cathedral and buy tickets to walk on the roof to get the best view of Milan.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Next door to Duomo is Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the oldest and most beautiful shopping plazas in the world. Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton are some the stores that populate this shopping mall, but take the kids browsing at the Ferrari store. On the bottom floor is a driving simulator. Also, find the bull floor mosaic in the middle of the mall. Legend is that spinning three times on the bull will bring good luck.

The Last Supper

The most famous artwork in Milan is Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, which can be found at the Dominican convent located next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. If seeing this painting is on your list, book tickets online well in advance.

Exploring Milan

Milan is also filled with beautiful parks with playgrounds for the kids. Take time to walk through the neighborhoods and see the beautiful city.

What to Eat

Eating in anywhere in Italy is easy with kids. Pasta and pizza are my kids’ favorites! Most large and small restaurants sell pizzas for 6 Euros. I know Italians never share pizzas, but one was just too large for my kids. They always split a pizza and had more than enough. My kids also tried all types of pasta with different sauces and never found one they did not like. Gelato is a must in Milan and the shops are everywhere. We tried many types of Italian cookies that were delicious as well.
