Tips for Visiting the Bronx Zoo with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Whether you are visiting New York City in the summer, fall, winter or spring there really is no bad time to visit the Bronx Zoo; however, fall is my favorite time because the animals are so active and all the spring baby animals are growing up and showing their personalities.

Located at 2300 Southern Boulevard, the Bronx Zoo with over 6,000 animals on 200 acres is one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world. Easily accessible by car or public transportation, the beautiful and lush habitats make you believe you are in the wilds of Africa, Asia or South America instead of a borough of New York City.

Bronx Zoo tips for visiting with kids

I am a 2015 Bronx Zoo ambassador and here are some Bronx Zoo tips to help you make the most of your visit:

Don’t forget your sneakers, sunblock, bug spray and water bottle

The Bronx Zoo wants you to have an adventure in nature. So in the park you will see African plains, Asian bamboo trees, South America vegetation along with beautiful animals in the most natural man-made habitats. You do not want to miss anything, so be prepared for a lot of walking and seeing amazing sights and sounds. A water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, sun and pest protection will make for happy zoo visitors and allow you to really enjoy the exhibits.

Take your favorite Wheeled Transportation

Whether it is a stroller, wheelchair, wagon or scooter, bring it with you to the Bronx Zoo! The 200-acre grounds are large. Little and big feet will get tired because when you’re not on the shuttle or monorail, you will be walking. Luckily, all of the pathways to the different exhibits are paved, wide and wheel-friendly.

If you are traveling light, strollers, wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles can be rented at entrance; however, supplies are limited so arrive early if you want to rent one. Tip: All strollers have to be packed up when riding the shuttle and monorail.

Check the Bronx Zoo Event Calendar Prior to Your Trip

I love how the Bronx Zoo highlights educational programs every day to make the most of your trip. So definitely visit the Bronx Zoo event page to confirm that all exhibits like the Congo Gorilla Forest are open and if any special events or concerts are taking place. Some must-do educational activities throughout the year are the Nature Club and Boo at the Zoo.

Good Eats at the Zoo

The zoo allows you to bring in baby food, formula, snacks and drinks in non-glass bottles. They also have multiple food stands, seasonal cafés and the Dancing Crane Café to keep you hydrated and fueled up. Plus the kid’s lunch comes with a souvenir bag you can take home with you. I love the unlimited drink deals for warm days.

Discounts on Bronx Zoo Tickets

If you are active U.S. Military or a NYC college student, present your ID for savings. For everyone else, save 10% on your ticket by purchasing online and consider upgrading your admission to the Total Experience ticket so you can visit the Children’s Zoo and ride the Bug Carousel, Rio 4D, Wild Asia Monorail and shuttle without additional fees.

Also, if you live close enough or are looking for a fall road trip, think about investing in the $195 Wildlife Conservation Society Premium Family Membership which gives you unlimited admission to four NYC tri-state area zoos and one aquarium, along with additional perks like free parking.

There are several Hilton accommodations like DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Fort Lee – George Washington Bridge that are less than 10 miles away from the zoo, airport and other city destinations.
