Ski Park City, Utah with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

When some good deals on airfare to Salt Lake City recently caught our eye, my husband and I decided it was time to take our Texas kids to see real snow for the first time in their lives. We had been on a few skiing holidays before we had kids and were excited to introduce them to the thrill of swishing down the slopes. Though there are several ski areas in close proximity to the Salt Lake City airport, we decided to ski Park City and were not disappointed.

Tips for Visiting Park City with Kids

Before You Go

Save time and money by purchasing lift tickets before you leave home. Your lift ticket is called an Epic Pass and is similar to a credit card. You keep it in a zippered pocket and the employees scan you when you go through the lift lines. You can also set up ski lessons before you leave home, which could be a very good idea if you’re going at a peak time.

Ski Lessons

We opted to reserve a full-day lesson the first day we were in Park City. The friendly and energetic workers at the ski school drop off helped calm the nervousness our boys felt about trying something new. I skied off to see how much I remembered, and when I picked the boys up at 3 pm that afternoon, I had two excited and confident skiers who couldn’t wait to hit the slopes again the next day! I was very pleased with how far they had come on control, turning, and getting on and off the chairlifts.

That’s a Big Mountain!

Even though we were skiing the week before Christmas and not all the lifts were open yet, the ski slopes didn’t feel very crowded. This might be due to the fact that the mountain you are skiing on is over six miles wide, which allows people to spread out over an extensive terrain. Beginner skiers shouldn’t be alarmed when the trail map shows more blue and black runs than green. We had no trouble finding appropriate ski slopes for our boys to enjoy with us and still covered only a fraction of those six miles.

Other Things I Liked About Visiting Park City with Kids

We got to the mountain early on the days we skied and found that there was no shortage of free parking available. If your kids will be in ski school, park near the “First Time” lift, which is near the ski school meeting place. At the end of the day, you’ll be able to practically ski right to your car. Another option is to make use of the parking garage. Although there’s a $20 per day fee to park here, it might be worth it to have an enclosed space to gather your things and change your boots.

Of course, the ski area was in great shape with good powder, groomed slopes, and well-marked trails. There were also attendants on hand at the large map boards to help find a good run and answer any questions. Along the slopes there were large yellow signs marking rest areas which allowed people a safe space to take a break while going down the mountain. These were especially useful when we skied with our kids on some of the long green runs.

We couldn’t leave the Park City ski area without trying the Alpine Coaster. Half the fun is getting to the top of the track as you slowly traverse above ski slopes and through the snow-covered pines. When you reach the top, it’s full throttle as you control the braking system on your personal car and zip through the twists and turns back to the starting point of this thrilling journey.

We had a great time visiting and skiing Park City, and my boys are already planning their return trip to hit the slopes again.
