Boothe Memorial Park & Museum

Located in Stratford, CT, “the oldest homestead in America,” the Boothe Memorial Park & Museum sits on 32 acres that include picnic areas, playgrounds, gardens and historic buildings from the 1800 and 1900s. Your kids will love hearing about the Boothe family genealogy, touring the Clock Tower and Americana Museums, and seeing volunteers work real metal in the Blacksmith Shop.

No admission is required to visit and walk through this park listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Check the website prior to your visit to verify that free tours are being given of historical buildings.

Wadsworth Falls State Park

If you love fishing, hiking, picnicking and swimming, Wadsworth Falls State Park is the place for you. Located in Middletown, CT, this park is perfect place to enjoy the best of nature with a nominal fee.

Dinosaur State Park

Did you know one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America is located in Rocky Hill, CT? Dinosaur State Park celebrates the 50 years since that fateful day when farmer Edward McCarthy turned over a slab of gray sandstone with his bulldozer to discover prehistoric footprints.

The park includes a geodesic dome with fossil tracks, a discovery room and more than two miles of nature trails commemorating the Triassic and Jurassic times. The actual museum is not that big so it’s perfect for little feet, but be forewarned that the area around the dinosaur tracks can be a little scary with lighting and sounds that take you back to the age of the dinosaurs.

Gillette Castle State Park

With its sweeping walls, stone design and stone-arch bridges, Gillette Castle State Park makes you feel like you have been transported into medieval times. Walk inside Gillette Castle to find elaborate furniture, priceless works of art and the unique dream home of William Hooker Gillette, noted actor, director, and playwright.

With its 24 rooms, secret doors and winsome design overlooking Connecticut river, this medieval castle is definitely a one-of-a-kind attraction. Sadly, no flash photography, video, wheelchairs or strollers are allowed within castle, but with its hiking trails, views and unique history this attraction is definitely a great place to spend the afternoon with the family.
