Puerto Vallarta Fishing on a Shared Charter

Posted in Articles | by

The Marieta Islands, located just off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, are popular for snorkeling and scuba diving trips and hidden, secluded beaches. To the fisherman in the family, however, a sailfish jumping out of the clear blue waters behind your boat might be more exciting. Unfortunately, private boat charters can be cost prohibitive if there are only one or two people interested. Norma, an agent at the tours desk at Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort, provided a perfect solution: a shared boat from Mike’s Fishing Charters & Tours.

Your Best Option for a Puerto Vallarta Fishing Trip

Mike’s fishing charter will match you with other small groups to have up to eight people on the boat. For the day my husband and his fishing buddy chose, they were the only two in the group meaning they had a private charter for a fraction of the cost!

They met the captain and two crew members at a nearby marina and set sail. With a short cruise to the mouth of the river, the lines were in the water in no time with the opportunity to catch sea bass, snapper, and snook. Like any fishing trip, the weather and elements play a large part in the response of the fish, and rain hadn’t been favorable to get one of these on the line.

Fishing Near the Marieta Islands

Undeterred, they made a path directly to the Marieta Islands. After a short time trolling, the action picked up when they hooked into several schools of skipjack and had several poles active at a time. The highlight of the trip was the appearance of a sailfish striking the lures and then spitting it out in a defiant manner representative of the trophy fish for which they are known. Several large crevalle jack provided an exciting battle during the trip and left the fishermen tired but smiling.

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Charters - Big Fish Caught

Taking a semi-private Puerto Vallarta fishing charter is a great way to make the big catch without the big crowds.

A Beautiful End to a Puerto Vallarta Fishing Charter

From the fish that were caught, one of the crew members prepared fresh ceviche, a Mexican version of sushi made with Mexican seasonings, onions, salt and lime. It was a great addition to the box lunch provided on the boat, but my husband also recommends taking a few snacks for the eight-hour excursion.

On the way back to the marina, the guys saw dolphins, sea turtles, and of course viewed the beautiful mountains of Puerto Vallarta in the distance. Even with all the potential sightseeing, my husband opted for a comfortable spot on the boat to take an afternoon siesta. That was just the thing to cap off a fun Puerto Vallarta fishing adventure with a buddy and a successful day with Mike’s Fishing Charters & Tours.
