Instagram Scavenger Hunt: Seattle Landmarks

Posted in Articles | by

I’m excited for this post because Seattle, Washington was the very first photo scavenger hunt my family and I ever planned. We’ve been doing this for so many years that believe it or not, Instagram wasn’t even a thing yet when we started!

I can’t wait to return to the Emerald City this summer and recreate our last trip so we can snap the quintessential 9 squares via IG. Kiddo is older now and I bet seeing these spots with new eyes will be a trip for her.

Tip: For your listening pleasure, we suggest the soundtrack from the movie Singles which is everything wonderful about Seattle’s early 90s music scene: Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Hendrix and Heart.

Instagram Scavenger Hunt Checklist:

✔ Pike Place Fish Company is famous for their tradition of fishmongers throwing fish that customers have purchased, before they are wrapped. And the pieces are HUGE!

Visit Pike Place Fish Company in the market for one of the iconic Seattle landmarks.

✔ Local Street Art: Downtown Seattle has great art everywhere you look. Whether it’s a painting, sculpture or manhole!

✔ The Space Needle is another trademark of the city’s skyline and serves as a favorite tourist spot. The view from the observatory deck on a clear sunny day is one you’ll never forget, and this Seattle landmark is also a restaurant.

✔ Mount Rainier over yonder seems to watch over you all across Seattle. Covered in snow 365 days a year, this famous mountain creeps around every corner in the distance, and the fact that it is actually a volcano is haunting.

✔ Freemont Troll: His eye is a hubcap, he has a star on his nose, and there used to be a time capsule inside the VW Bug filled with Elvis Presley memorabilia. However, when someone stole the California license plate off of the car, they removed the time capsule.

Don’t miss the Freemont troll, one of the fun Seattle landmarks in our scavenger hunt.

✔ Kurt’s Park: On the three-way corner of Lake Washington, Denny-Blaine and 40th Avenue sits Viretta Park, next to the home where Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain lived and eventually died in April 1994. The area overlooking Lake Washington is quite peaceful, and the park bench is adored with graffiti notes left by fans.

✔ EMP/MoPOP: Founded by Paul Allen in 2000, the Museum of Pop Culture was designed by architect Frank Gehry and showcases rare rock memorabilia and artifacts. The Northwest Passage exhibit focuses on the history of Seattle’s music scene.

✔ Starbucks: OK, this is not just any old Starbucks, but THE original Starbucks at 1912 Pike Place. Yes, you heard me: the location of the very first Starbucks which opened over four decades ago. Consider it your pilgrimage to the java Mecca in Pike Place Market. Fun fact: Because the market is a historical district with specific design guidelines it must uphold, the store retains its original look from 1971, which is great for Instagram!

✔ The Market Theater Gum Wall: It’s 100% gross but a must in every Seattle IG feed. In 2015, the city cleaned the wall for the first time in 20 years, but don’t worry, it is alive and thriving again.

If you’re taking Instagram pictures of Seattle, you won’t want to miss the ooey gooey Gum Wall.

✔ Other Instagram worthy spots to consider: Jimi Hendrix statue, Lake Washington, and Chihuly Garden and Glass studio.

Hilton Seattle is located in the heart of the city within walking distance of many of these Seattle landmarks, including Pike Place Market (home of the fish market, original Starbucks and gum wall) and the Seattle Center (location for the Space Needle, MoPOP and Chihuly Garden and Glass).
