Meeting YouTube Celebrities at VidCon
“Dad, can we go to VidCon?” my daughter asked. “What’s that?” I said. “It’s a convention for YouTube stars. Jethro and I really want to go.”
A trip to Anaheim Convention Center for an event I had never heard of was not on my list of trips to take. I was skeptical at first. We were going to Southern California to stalk people I don’t know. I told my friends, I’m going for my kids. I’ll be there taking pictures for my kids.
When I got there, though, I got caught up in the excitement of everything. I found myself taking pictures of people I don’t know when I saw crowds of teens chasing them down. I was the paparazzo on his first day on the job. It was unexpectedly fun.
What is VidCon?
Hank and his brother John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, founded VidCon in 2010. This June will mark the seventh year they’ve put on the annual convention, which has grown from around 1,400 attendees in 2010 to nearly 20,000 in 2015. The three-day event begins in the morning at 9 am and ends at midnight. There are talks and panels, autograph signings, picture taking, concerts, booths with giveaways, and movie nights to end the day.
Our children got to meet some of their favorite YouTube celebrities for autographs and pictures. We even met up with their cousins at Disneyland for half a day, and separately my daughter attended an Imagine Dragons concert on another night. This might be the first time our kids requested a vacation destination that was not on my radar, and it turned out to be one of our most enjoyable trips.
Best VidCon Hotel
What made this trip even more fun was our stay at Hilton Anaheim. It meant we stayed at the official VidCon hotel where fans waited by the elevator for celebrities to exit. We saw many YouTube celebrities in the elevator and lobby area. I found myself asking my daughter throughout the day, “Who was that?” For once, my kids were my tour guides. That was different. That was fun.
