A Fixer Upper Fix: Visit Magnolia Market at the Silos
It may very well be time to take notice of Waco, Texas as more than a brief stop on your travels between Dallas and Austin. With several years of revitalization in the downtown area and the recent popularity of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, Waco is quickly becoming a destination unto itself.
One of the most popular attractions, no doubt, is the Magnolia Market at the Silos, the creation of Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines. If you think this is a place to just buy caricature key chains and coffee mugs with the show logo on it, you will be pleasantly surprised to see this is so much more than just a store.
Magnolia Market Items for Sale
Many of the pieces you see Joanna Gaines use to stage the homes at the end of the show are available for purchase in the shop. Farmhouse decor such as the magnolia wreath, cotton stems, and tabletop trays are in abundance. You can also find everything from kitchen linens and lighting accessories to jewelry and baskets.
Men can check out Chip’s Corner where flowers are banned and ball caps, thermoses, and other manly items reign. And that logo tee? It’s super-soft…and not far from the coffee mug.
While the market itself is a great stop, the outside is where the real fun begins. The large green space in the middle is a great play area for the kiddos and adults alike. Lawn games are available for everyone’s use, and it’s a great place for family time or to make new friends.
Walk through the garden area to see what plants and flowers are in season. Play under the wooden teepee, and visit some of the Gaines’ goats. Borrow a children’s book for a storytime when the kids need a little break.
Magnolia Market Food Trucks
The food trucks at the Magnolia Market are a big draw for visitors and locals alike. There is a wide variety of choices, but one of my favorites is Asian-fusion truck Club Sandwich. I recommend the Trash Can Rice Bowl with braised beef and sriracha sauce, but ask for samples if something else peaks your interest.
Enjoy your meal at one of the many picnic tables which have attached shade covers to provide some relief from the hot Texas sun. The Magnolia Market’s Bakery at the Silos is a great stop for a sweet treat to top off the day.
Magnolia Market at the Silos Parking
The biggest challenge to visiting Magnolia Market is parking. The location is in the downtown area, attracts crowds of people, and simply doesn’t have large parking lots. Be prepared to park and walk a few blocks. Also, be attentive to how you drive and where you park. There is a school nearby with crosswalks that students regularly use, and their parking lot and those of other private businesses should not be used by Magnolia Market visitors.
I highly recommend staying at Hilton Waco during your visit. It’s only a 15-minute walk from the hotel to Magnolia Market, and there are plenty of other things to see and do within walking distance or a short drive away.
A visit to Magnolia Market at the Silos is like taking a step back in time updated with just the right things to make it fun and interesting. The friendly atmosphere and carefully planned areas make it a great stop for the whole family. As a local, I even like to visit for lunch; maybe I’ll see you down there soon and we can share a picnic table!
