Hilton Austin Airport: More Than Just an Airport Hotel
Since the two major airports we fly from are over an hour from our home and we usually have early morning departures, my family often books a hotel near the airport the night before our trip. We pick these hotels based on location because airport hotels are generally pretty boring. Hilton Austin Airport breaks the mold, though, and our family can’t wait to head back to this unique Austin airport hotel.
Why the Hilton is One of the Best Austin Airport Hotels
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was previously an Air Force Base, and the building that now houses Hilton Austin Airport was the headquarters. Nicknamed “The Donut” because of its round shape with a hole in the middle, this building served as a strategic air command center during three wars and was one of only three Cold War bunkers in the U.S. where the President could be evacuated in the event of a nuclear strike.
From the moment you walk in, you can sense the history of this unusual hotel. The large, open atrium – the hole of the donut – has had a roof added and now houses a coffee bar, restaurant, and seating areas. The concrete walls of this bunker-turned-hotel provide great insulation from airport or other noise. The meeting and banquet rooms at the hotel are located underground, but the lowest floors were filled in when the building was renovated. Imagining the busy government workers and strategizing of military leaders in years gone by is an interesting part of a visit to the hotel.
Tips for Your Stay
We ate at Creeks Restaurant in the atrium area of the hotel and found the farm-to-table food a welcome surprise. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and our room was spacious and comfortable. Tip: Check the upgrade options after booking at Hilton.com. We were able to upgrade from a standard room to a one-bedroom suite for less than 500 Hilton Honors points!
Closest Austin Airport Hotel
Most importantly, Hilton Austin Airport is the closest hotel to the terminals, located less than a 5-minute shuttle ride from the airport. Upon arrival, the valet informed us of the Park-N-Fly package, and for $40 we had valet parking during our stay and vacation. When we were ready for the shuttle to pick us up on our return, the valet went and got our car and had it cooling down for us — a valuable thing during a hot Texas summer!
Our family is looking forward to our next flight out of Austin, not only because we will be on vacation but also because it will give us the opportunity to stay at the unique Hilton Austin Airport hotel!
