The Harry Potter Studio Tour in London

Posted in Articles | by

The Making of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studio in London is a must see for any Harry Potter fan. Going behind the scenes of one of the most beloved series of all times is a special experience to be had when visiting London.

The tour begins at the Cupboard Under the Stairs followed by a brief video on the making of the movies and behind-the-scenes action. Each child is given a passport that can be stamped at several locations throughout the tour.

One of the first scenes on the Harry Potter studio tour in London is the Cupboard Under the Stairs.

You are then brought into the Great Hall where the official behind-the-scenes action begins. You immediately feel like you are part of the film, standing where it all began. The Great Hall is a magnificent sight and is by far one of the best parts of the Harry Potter studio tour.

Your first official stop on the tour is the Great Hall.

Beyond that, you will find artifacts and vignettes from many scenes in the movies. Some of our favorites were the Yule Ball, the Goblet of Fire, Snape’s laboratory and the Gryffindor dorm room.

The Gryffindor dorm room of Harry, Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus. Ask a studio staff member nearby about hidden secrets on this and other sets.

Before you head to Platform 9 3/4, be sure to ride a broomstick in the green room and purchase a photo as a keepsake. Move onto to Platform 9 3/4  and take a seat on the Hogwarts Express. It feels as though you are riding on the train when the Dementors sweep in, but never fear, you are safe and the ride comes to an end just as quickly as it began.

Next you will head over to the Backlot Café where you can purchase some Butterbeer. If you are anything like us, you have always wondered what it tastes like. So grab a souvenir glass of the famous beverage and head outside to check out the Dursley’s home, the Night Bus and the Hogwarts bridge featured in many of the movies.

One of our favorite parts of the tour comes near the end. You will find many models of props and locations in the films throughout the tour, but nothing is more spectacular than the huge model of Hogwarts. The castle is absolutely stunning and was used to film scenes in the movies. Spend some time here; the size and scale of the castle is incredible and will undoubtedly be a favorite for your family as well.

The scale model of Hogwarts Castle at the end of the Harry Potter studio tour is spectacular!

Last, but certainly not least is the walk through Diagon Alley and into the gift shop. Diagon Alley isn’t as interactive, but it is a lot of fun to see the stores the students would often visit and get an idea of how it felt to walk along that street.

My kids loved coming to the end where you enter into Ollivander’s Wand Shop. They really enjoyed finding their favorite characters’ wands, and we left with our very own to bring home. The kids chose Harry, Hermoine and Ginny.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets

We booked a tour through Viator which included transportation to and from the studios, as well as tickets to the Harry Potter studio tour. The only issue we had was that we did not think there was enough time to see everything we wanted to see. The tour company provided us the option to extend our tour and take a later bus back to London. If you are offered the same, I highly suggest taking this option.

You can also purchase tickets directly from Warner Bros. Studios and find your own transportation to the location. Find more information on this option in this article: Travel Tips For London: Seeing Harry Potter.

Whichever method you choose, you will have to select a time for your Harry Potter studio tour tickets, as admission into the behind-the-scenes area is offered every 30 minutes from 9 am to 4:30 pm. And you’ll want to purchase your tickets as soon as you know your plans because tickets from both Warner Bros. Studios and the London tour bus operators sell out several weeks in advance.

The Harry Potter studio tour in London was one of our most memorable experiences in London, and we look forward to finishing the series here at home.
