Fun Things to do in Tulsa, OK with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

My family calls northeastern Oklahoma home, and we live in a rural area near Tulsa. One of the things that I notice when I’m visiting other cities and enjoying their attractions is that we also have some incredible places for families to visit in Tulsa. Read along as I share some of my favorite kid friendly options in my own backyard, so to speak. Here is our list of fun things to do in Tulsa, OK with kids:

Tulsa Air & Space Museum

The Tulsa Air and Space Museum provides hands-on experiences that are educational as well as fun, which is my favorite way to learn. Kids and adults alike can participate in a simulated launching of the Discovery Space Shuttle. Kids can also sit at the controls of a wind tunnel model of an F-16 and try their skill at flying a jet. They can operate a robotic arm and see what it is like working in space with the space shuttle or climb in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. The museum also has a planetarium theater with an excellent showing of educational films.

Tip: The staff and volunteers are a wealth of information and love to share their knowledge with others. Make sure you visit with them.

Oxley Nature Center

The Oxley Nature Center is located in Mohawk Park and is in the same vicinity as the Tulsa Zoo & Living Museum. It provides educational exhibits and great hiking trails to explore nature with your family. One of the wonderful features of Tulsa is that we truly have four different seasons so regardless of when you visit, you are going to be amazed by nature’s beauty.

Tip: There are no concessions available, so you will need to bring your own water bottle or trail snack and make sure you leave no trash behind.

Tulsa Zoo

As a child my first school field trip, and most likely my second, third one, etc., was to the Tulsa Zoo. It has always been a popular choice among families and educational institutions as a way to have fun and learn while doing so.

One of my favorite memories was visiting the zoo when my son was still in a stroller. We visited early when the zoo first opened. Apparently, all the animals had just awakened for the day as well and as we entered the area we could hear the monkeys testing their vocal cords in the quiet morning. I’m not sure who was louder, the monkeys or my son from excitement.

A couple of the popular exhibits for us include the sea lion show, the penguins and the petting zoo. Even though I was raised on a farm, I still love petting small animals, especially when someone else has to feed them.

Tip: Don’t forget to ride the train. We usually do this first thing as it circles the zoo and helps you decide which exhibits you want to visit first. Lions, tigers and bears…oh my!

Tulsa is a great city for families to visit year round. A hotel that we’ve stayed at many times and is perfect for families is Embassy Suites Tulsa. This hotel has an indoor pool, kids game room, free made-to-order breakfast and a complimentary evening cocktail hour for parents with kid-friendly snacks and drinks. Bonus was the “Wow Cart” that visited the rooms in the evening with free snacks or toiletries you might have forgotten…I was WOWED!
