Fun Things to do in Pensacola Beach, FL with Kids
If there is a beach nearby our vacation destination, I always try to find a way to get there for at least a day. On our recent vacation to New Orleans, we took a detour to spend the weekend at Pensacola Beach. This town not only had a fantastic beach, but so much more as well. Here are our suggestions for fun things to do in Pensacola Beach, FL with kids.
4 Great Pensacola Beach Attractions for Families
My family loves history, so a stop at Fort Pickens was on our itinerary. This fort was built in 1834 to help protect Pensacola Bay. It was in use during the Civil War. We enjoyed touring ruins of barracks and cannons at this national park. Fort Pickens is located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore just outside of Pensacola Beach.
I was excited to climb the steps to the top of the Pensacola Lighthouse, frequently listed as one of the most haunted lighthouses in America. At the top of this structure build in 1859, you’ll find the best views in the area. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids 12 and under. Note that the lighthouse is located on an active military base, so you must show identification to enter. For safety, children must be at least 44 inches or 7 years-old to climb the tower. Also, flip flops can not be worn.
Pensacola Naval Air Station is home to the famous Blue Angels. This team of exhibition pilots was formed in 1946 to gain interest in Naval aviation and boost morale. See the team of planes practice their routine from March to November. Visit their website for exact show and practice time dates.
Red Fish Blue Fish
We felt like we hit the jackpot when we found Red Fish Blue Fish. Located across the street from Hilton Pensacola Beach, this restaurant is a great choice for families. The majority of the restaurant has outdoor seating on the bay. In addition to large picnic tables, the restaurant lawn has life-size Jenga, Connect Four and horseshoes to play while waiting for food to arrive. The kids had a great time playing while my husband and I enjoyed the sunset. Another bonus is that all kids meals are only $5!
Where to Stay in Pensacola Beach
Hilton Pensacola Beach is so much more than just a beach hotel; it’s a true getaway for families. There are two oceanfront pools plus an indoor pool. Standard rooms are available, but my family loved staying in one of their many suites. One, two, and three bedroom suites are available for a larger family or parents that just need their own space.
We stayed in a three bedroom suite complete with a full kitchen and laundry room. It was so nice to eat breakfast on the balcony overlooking the ocean and be able to wash our sandy swimsuits.
The pier, plus shopping and restaurants, are all within walking distance. Stop at one of the grocery stores on the way to the hotel and pick up snacks and drinks. We also purchased boogie boards and sand toys that were put to good use!
