Billionaire’s Beach: Fun Things to Do in Malibu, CA with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

During my early teens, I would daydream of trading in my wool sweater and L.L. Bean boots for flip flops on a daily basis. Dreaming in detail of hightailing it cross country in my little convertible to the place where my friends: Brandon, Brenda, Dylan, Kelly and Donna summer vacationed. The place: Malibu, California. But in true east coast fashion, I put those dreams on the back burner and I ended up swapping my convertible for an all-wheel drive SUV, and invested in some warm boots.

Until a few years later when I realized I could not stand one more gray day, rain drop or snow flurry. I did not want to live for summer anymore buried in a cube, counting the days to Memorial Day. I longed for sunshine all year round and sand between my toes. So I fled. With a one-way ticket in my hand I moved to Southern California, and guess what, my 90210 BFF’s were right, Malibu Beach is AMAZING!

It’s hard to believe something so special exists just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. “The ‘bu” as locals call it, is a 21-mile stretch of prime Pacific coastline where the desert meets the ocean and the views are absolutely breathtaking, making it a great family-friendly day trip for those staying at The Beverly Hilton or Hilton Woodland Hills.

This iconic surf town overflows with charm, beauty and style, but don’t let the flip flops and casual California surfer/hippy vibe fool you. Malibu is considered one of the most affluent towns in the U.S. with a median home value of $2.85 million and the architecture to prove it. I personally would describe the Malibu and its culture as, “Point Break-meets-Beverly Hills with a boho chic twist.”

Those looking to experience Malibu Beach will quickly learn there many places to explore depending on the amount of time you have to spend and your interests.

Shop

The Malibu Country Mart, located in the heart of Malibu’s Civic Center, is home to high-end designer stores, world-class gardens, unique sculptures and a popular children’s playground. Throughout the year, the Mart hosts seasonal events to bring family, friends and the community together right on property.

Snack

Make a point to have lunch on the oceanfront terrace at The Malibu Beach Inn in Carbon Beach. Not only do they boast the best views in Malibu, but you also have direct access to the beach just steps from the water. If you are looking to order something to remember, I highly recommend the Handmade Handkerchief Pasta with local Brentwood Farms sweet yellow corn, Oregon Morel mushrooms and black truffle, and save room for dessert because the warm Chocolate Chip Pie is everything.
