What to do in Knoxville, TN in a Day
Last year, we found ourselves in Knoxville, TN, but we only had one day to explore. It was a new city to all of us, and we wanted to get as much out of the day as possible. After a good amount of research, we decided on these three options. Our stay at Hilton Knoxville made these options convenient and easy to explore.
3 Fun Things to do in Knoxville, TN & Nearby with Kids
World’s Fair Park
The World’s Fair was hosted in Knoxville in 1982 when over 11 million visitors experienced the history of eastern Tennessee. Many of the attractions in World’s Fair Park are still great options to visit today. Fort Kid is a large playground, which offers a great place for kids to get some of their travel wiggles out after a day of driving!
The most visible attraction from the World’s Fair is the Sunsphere. The Sunsphere is a 26-story observation tower that provides a sweeping view of the city. Both adults and children will enjoy the beautiful views from the tower.
Market Square District
Market Square is located downtown in a double-level district that features restaurants, gardens, pubs, and an outdoor amphitheater. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has been a place for people to meet and trade goods since the mid 1850s.
Today, you can dine outside on the patios during warmer months or take in the live entertainment on weekends. A farmers market dominates the area on Wednesdays and Saturdays. With parking available within walking distance, we spent some time wandering the shops and experiencing a uniquely casual but bustling atmosphere.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
We left Knoxville and headed southeast to spend some time in the most visited national park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park spans over 500,000 square acres, has over 700 miles of streams, and over 800 miles of hiking trails. Some of the best trails in the U.S. may be found here, but the park boasts a wide range of trails. You will find hiking trails that vary greatly in length and difficulty making this national park suitable for both non-hiking families and advanced trekkers.
There are dozens of activities to enjoy in the park. We saw many people who brought picnics and enjoyed the scenery. Others came prepared for hiking. Some areas of the park allow horseback riding, fishing, camping, and biking. As in most parks, there are several options for ranger-guided tours, as well as the Junior Ranger program which teaches children about the area surrounding the park. In addition to our two short hikes to Cataract Falls and the John Ownby cabin, we enjoyed an auto tour through a small section of the park during our visit.
It was a full and busy day, but we thoroughly enjoyed these 3 fun things to do in Knoxville, TN with kids!
