Fun Things to Do in Key Largo, Florida with Kids
Key Largo is the northernmost of the Keys in Florida and is located only an hour south of Miami. It has a laid-back, tropical feel, and with its beautiful beaches, warm weather and many water sports, it’s a great vacation destination for families. Here are some of our recommended things to do in Key Largo, Florida with kids.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
This state park is the first undersea park in the United States and a perfect spot for viewing colorful fish, coral and wildlife. The coral reefs here are considered some of the most beautiful and diverse found throughout the world. You can take scheduled snorkel trips to the best reefs about eight miles off shore or a 2 1/2-hour glass bottom boat ride. We chose the boat ride and appreciated the narrative that came along with the amazing views of wildlife, fish and coral.
Theater of the Sea
Theater of the Sea is a marine mammal adventure that features dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows. They also offer a short bottomless boat ride and they have a lagoon beach where you can swim and snorkel. This is a great spot for seeing marine animals up close.
With the crystal clear water and varied fish and ocean life, Key Largo is an ideal spot for snorkeling. As long as kids know how to swim, they can have fun snorkeling as there is plenty to see, even close to shore.
With Key Largo’s location between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, there are numerous ways to have fun in the water. Our whole family did a great job on the stand-up paddle boards we rented from Caribbean Watersports at Hilton Key Largo Resort. My 11-year old enjoyed kayaking through the smooth water of the Gulf of Mexico. Other fun water activities include fishing, sailing, parasailing and riding wave runners.
Eat Local Food
While staying in Key Largo, be sure to try the fresh fish and local lobster if it is in season. If you go fishing during the day you can even bring your catch to certain restaurants like Buzzards Roost Key Largo and they will cook it for you! Another Key Largo specialty is key lime pie, a tropical dessert that is tart and creamy and the perfect treat after a healthy fish meal.
A scenic and convenient place to stay in the area is Hilton Key Largo Resort.
