Fun Things to do in Innsbruck, Austria with Kids
As soon as we drove into Innsbruck, all I could think to myself was that I wished we had more time there. The breathtaking Alps that surround the town beg for adventure. Innsbruck, located in northern Austria, is known for fantastic snow skiing in the winter, but as I discovered, the city also offers great activities in the summer, too. Here are our recommendations for fun things to do in Innsbruck, Austria with kids.
Old Town Innsbruck
Old Town was our first stop. Yhe kids enjoyed walking through this pedestrian zone. Outdoor cafés line the streets so it’s the perfect dinner spot. The kids will quickly learn that gelato is available everywhere as well. Continue walking through Old Town to the river and pass the famous Golden Roof.
Kids will enjoy the Alpenzoo. It is Europe’s highest zoo and located on the mountainside. It can be reached by the Nordkettenbahnen cable car system that leaves from Old Town. The ride up the mountain is part of the fun! Continue up the mountain to Seegrube and have lunch overlooking the city.
Jewels for Kids
Just outside Innsbruck is Swarovski Crystal Worlds. Not only does this place sparkle, it also has caves, gardens, and a children’s play tower.
Visit the other gem in Innsbruck, the Bergisel Ski Jump. The jump is the training site for Olympic hopefuls. A two-minute elevator ride takes visitors to the top. Go for breakfast or lunch at the restaurant on top and have perfect views of Innsbruck.
Traveling to Innsbruck
Innsbruck is easily reached by train or car. We drove to Innsbruck after touring the castles in southern Germany. Innsbruck is just a 1 1/2-hour drive from Neuschwanstein Castle with some of the most beautiful scenery. Make sure and plan plenty of time for Innsbruck!
