Fun Things to do in Galveston, TX for the Holidays

Posted in Articles | by

When I think of Galveston, my first thought is sand, water and the beach. However, Galveston Island has activities for your family throughout the year that don’t just focus on building sandcastles and soaking up the sunshine.

Galveston is an easy 50-minute drive from Houston and offers plenty of activities and adventures to please everyone in the family. The holiday time is especially exciting as this beach destination is turned into a Winter Wonderland complete with ice skating, ice sculptures, amazing light displays and festivals. See my list of fun things to do in Galveston, TX for the holidays.

Moody Gardens

Moody Gardens sits on 262 acres allowing visitors to explore exhibits showcasing nature in their Aquarium Pyramid and Rainforest Pyramid. Visitors can ride the zipline as well as get up close and have encounters with penguins and seals. During the holidays, Moody Gardens presents their Festival of Lights which includes over 100 lighted scenes and an outdoor ice skating rink. This year they also have an interactive ice sculpture exhibit with giant ice sculptures and an ice slide that everyone will love.

Pleasure Pier

Pleasure Pier consists of restaurants, shops and amusement park rides on a pier over the Gulf of Mexico. On weekends, you can ride the roller coaster, Ferris wheel and carousel on the historic pier that dates back to the early 1900s. My family loves that there are so many restaurants that we can easily find something that we all agree on.

Historic Downtown Strand District

The downtown area is full of shops, museums and restaurants. The first weekend in December, the streets come alive as the Galveston Historical Foundation presents its annual Dickens on the Strand festival, based on 19th century Victorian London. You’ll find costumed street performers singing carols, juggling and entertaining visitors. You also can take a self guided tour of The Grand 1894 Opera House and imagine yourself living in the era when it was built. Throughout the month, the Opera House has various productions celebrating the holiday season.

Make it an entire weekend and stay at Hilton Galveston Island Resort. Even in the winter months, our family loves the view of the ocean it provides.
