Fun Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas

Posted in Articles | by

In addition to its beautiful beaches, sparkling ocean and year round sunshine, the Cabo San Lucas area offers a myriad of memorable activities and experiences for families who visit the region. Here are some suggestions for fun things to do in Cabo San Lucas and nearby to help with your planning:

Whale watching

A whale watching excursion topped our list of things to do while visiting Los Cabos, particularly because we were there during the winter months. (Whale watching season extends from December through April.) We booked our trip with Cabo Adventures, one of the leading companies specializing in whale photo safari trips.

During our exhilarating outing on one of their speedboats, we saw several humpback whales and also made a quick stop by the famous El Arco rock formation and the nearby sea lion colony. We also enjoyed a bit of education about these magnificent mammals by the boat’s captain.

Deep-Sea Fishing

We are not a big fishing family, but one of other most sought after activities in this area according to the concierge at Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort is deep-sea fishing. This comes as no surprise since many refer to the Los Cabos area as “the marlin capital of the world.”

Accordingly, this activity is offered by a large number of local companies, most catering to all experience levels from the beginner angler to the expert fishermen. There are many different boat options and price levels, all making a selection somewhat daunting. I recommend doing some research on the Internet prior to your trip and talking to your hotel’s concierges as they are very familiar with best options and want to ensure their guests have the best experiences. Ours recommended Picante as one of the better choices.

Horseback Riding

Our family very much enjoyed horseback riding in the beautiful desert that surrounds the Cabo San Lucas area. Through this experience, we gained a new appreciation of the beautiful local landscape and varied terrain.

There are several vendors throughout the Los Cabos area that offer horseback riding on the beaches, but it is worth pointing out that many treat their animals inhumanely, leaving them out in the hot sun all day with no shade and little water. Our family decided to go with a better, albeit bit pricier option, offered by Cuadra San Francisco, a local family owned and operated equestrian center known for its riding school. This company offers many memorable trail rides, both on the beach and in the desert. Our one-hour ride through the beautiful and peaceful desert helped us understand what the locals mean when they say “there is more to Cabo than beaches.”

ATV Tours

Another memorable and very popular way to experience the Mexican lower Baja Peninsula is through one of the many ATV tours offered in the area. Given the nature of this “sport,” they mostly attract families with older kids and teens and promise adrenaline-pumping rides through desert, mountains, canyons or beaches, whatever your preference.

A tour by Cactus, one of the leading choices, even takes you to the ecological private reserve where you can learn interesting facts about the desert and interact with several exotic animals such as reptiles, amphibious and birds. This will likely be on our list of things to do next time we visit and our children are a bit older!

Wild Canyon

Another exhilarating adventure for families with older children and one for our future list (minimum age requirement is 8 years-old) is a visit to Wild Canyon, which offers breathtaking views as you zip through the mountain canopy or walk through 40-foot high bridges that stretch through the tree tops.

Sight Seeing Excursions

A great way to experience and learn more about Mexico’s Baja California Sur region are various sight seeing excursions. In addition to visiting the beautiful towns of Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo or a bit further, La Paz, the tours offer diverse and unique experiences. Visit the famous El Arco beach, a glass blowing factory in Los Cabos, or a blanket weaving factory or local market in La Paz.

Water Activities

We ran out of time to try surfing lessons, another popular sport in Cabo San Lucas enjoyed by many visiting families with older children. There are numerous choices in terms of location, break direction and levels of difficulty. Some of the guests at our hotel raved about their experiences and the beautiful coastal scenery they encountered.

Another water related activity we look forward to trying next time is a combined kayaking and snorkeling tour. If scuba diving is your passion, there are of course many options in the area as well. Other exciting excursions include parasailing and swimming with dolphins.
