Fun Things to Do in Boston With Kids
Boston may not be the first place you would think to vacation with your family but, think again because visiting Boston with kids is fantastic. Hands-down, this town fast became one of my family’s favorite places to explore.
In addition to being loaded with history and education, Boston has so many fun, family-friendly activities — most within walking distance or a quick trip on the subway. Even after four full days, we didn’t come close to doing everything that this city has to offer! Based on our first trip, here are our recommendations on fun things to do in Boston with kids.
First Things First: Where to Go, How to Get There
One great thing about heading to Boston was the fact that I didn’t have to worry about getting a rental car for transportation to get from here to there, and back again. This is always a plus in my book.
And, there is a fabulous hotel located directly in the center of everywhere we wanted to be. In fact, Hilton Boston Downtown/Faneuil Hall couldn’t have been in a better location if I had put it there myself. Seriously. The hotel is located within a short walk of Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, The New England Aquarium, The Freedom Trail, Boston Children’s Museum and the subway. It also has some of the most gracious, friendly and accommodating staff — and some of the most spacious rooms — that I have ever experienced in any major city. (Not to mention the finest Lobster Roll in town… And, you can rest assured that we did A LOT of research.)
While there for four full days, we were able to do quite a few things. We enjoyed a musical at the Boston Children’s Theatre (Honk! was brilliant), walked part of The Freedom Trail, visited Paul Revere’s house (best under $10 family admission I’ve ever spent), and went to the Museum of Science (excellent and one of our favorite things). We also strolled through the New England Aquarium, shopped and ate at Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market daily, visited the North End (to check out some beautiful old churches and eat the most delicious pastries) and went sledding and ice skating in Larz Anderson Park.
Seconds? Yes, Please.
I can honestly say that Boston will remain on the list of cities that we would like to visit again as a family. The things we REALLY want to do on our next visit, just to name a few, include: a game and tour at Fenway Park, a Boston Duck Boat Tour, the Skywalk Observatory, the New England Aquarium Whale Watch cruise and the Boston Children’s Museum.
And We’ll Take Thirds on the Food…
I don’t know about your clan but my for my family, enjoying delicious eats definitely adds to the vacation experience as it is a time to splurge and enjoy some not so healthy items that we don’t have on a regular basis.
From baked beans and lobster rolls to pizza, pastries, gelato and more, Boston is a great city for delicious food. A few of our favorites were Pizzeria Regina, The Black Rose, the food court in Quincy Market, Union Oyster House and Mike’s Pastry. All are very family friendly and most serve at least one thing that even a picky eater will enjoy. The restaurant inside Hilton Boston Downtown/Faneuil Hall, Nix Mate, also serves up a wonderful breakfast buffet (in addition to that fabulous Lobster Roll I mentioned earlier) that we got “fueled up” on, every morning, before taking to the streets by foot.
I really can’t say enough about this great city and am sold on all of the history, education, food and family-friendly fun that Boston has to offer. It’s sort of like New York City — with about half the people and half the commotion — but, in my opinion, a bit less intimidating, especially with children.
As a mom to a family that enjoys travel, I give Boston a two thumbs-up and think that it is a perfect destination to find all the excitement and activities one looks for in a family vacation. Overall, this city was a BIG win in my book. And, I bet it will be in yours too!
