Just a hop, skip and jump from several Hilton family hotels, Big Bear Lake is an easy destination within reach of many Southern California locations. Our family loves a winter weekend at Big Bear, and recently took a family ski trip to brush up on our ski and snowboard skills.
Infinitely family-friendly, the ski resorts at Big Bear Lake take all the stress out of the experience by offering a snow activities geared to every ability level, even those that prefer to hang out in the lodge. There are several mountains to choose from, whether you prefer to ski or ride, with the biggies being Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.
5 Fun Things to do in Big Bear Lake, CA
Skiing and Snowboarding
We chose to spend the day at Bear Mountain and arrived early to get a head start. Our family has varying abilities and interests, so it was important to us to choose a mountain where everyone would be comfortable. In total there were seven kids in our group, all needing something different. No problem! Bear Mountain has ski and snowboard schools for kids of all age groups (and adults of all ability levels). We put some kids in school, and the rest we let loose on the mountain. I must say, left to their own devices, they did pretty darn well.
Geared for families visiting to enjoy the snow, Big Bear Lake is like a giant playground of fun. Beyond the thrill of the slopes, there are many other things to do in the area.
Sledding and Sliding
Want some fun in the warm indoors? Bowling is always a family favorite, and the kids love the lanes at the Bowling Barn. Not into bowling? They also have a video arcade, pool tables and more.

The mom and pop shops and restaurants in Big Bear Lake Village offer a variety of clothing, art and more. There’s plenty to see by walking through this historic district.
Enjoy the peace and quiet as you wind through the trees on forest trails. Baldwin Lake Stables can set you up.
