Fun Things to Do in Austin with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Austin, Texas is a veritable carnival of activities for all ages. Whatever you like to do, you can find activities to fill a week-long vacation or a weekend getaway. Finding fun things to do in Austin with kids is easy and will make you the family hero.

Austin Food Trucks

You have to eat so you may as well make it fun! If you cross the Congress Street bridge and head south a few blocks, you will find an area that has been revitalized with hip shopping opportunities and several blocks of food opportunities. You truly can’t go wrong; we’ve had excellent Tex-Mex, burgers, and pancakes from the restaurants and food trucks.

Our last visit included a pizza parlor that served a variety of unique and delicious toppings. The girls even got balls of pizza dough to play with while we waited. Don’t forget the dessert trucks. Our favorite find so far was the cupcake truck with over a dozen different cake and icing options. Yum!

Inner Space Cavern

A short drive north from Austin is a small building advertising the Inner Space Cavern. This almost nondescript building opens up an expansive world underground.

Even on the hottest summer days, the caverns maintain a temperate (almost chilly, if you’re from Texas) 72° climate. The gift shop is filled with local and regional trinkets and treasures, and the guided tour is definitely worth the time.

The cavern system was originally discovered by the Texas Highway Department when conducting testing to build an overpass and opened to the public in 1966. You will journey underground thousands of feet on the cavern tour, but there are even more caverns that are not readily accessible to the public.

Play Hard, Rest Easy

When in Austin, be sure to book your room at Hilton Austin. This hotel is easily accessible to the downtown sites, the Texas State Capitol building, and plenty of food options. Although it’s a convention center hotel in the heart of the city, it’s one of the most family-friendly hotels we’ve ever stayed at. Don’t miss it!
