3 Fun Things to do in Annapolis, MD with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Just 30 miles from Washington, D.C. is the historic city of Annapolis, Maryland. This beautiful area on the Chesapeake Bay makes for a fantastic day trip from Washington, D.C. While a car would certainly make the trip easier, you can also take public transit by combining the Washington, D.C. Metro with a city bus. Here are a few of the places and activities we enjoy when we’re in Annapolis.

U.S. Naval Academy

Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, and while you can’t go wandering through the grounds at will, you can take a guided tour. The guided tour may be a bit much for younger kids, but definitely take them to the the Naval Academy Museum, which has a great collection of model ships on the second floor.

The Naval Academy Museum is free and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, excluding some holidays. Please note that access to the Naval Academy tour or museum requires an ID for anyone age 18 and over. Check their web site for additional details.

Boat Tour

You’ll find plenty of choices for tours on the water around Annapolis, from self-propelled tours by kayak to large passenger boats. We chose the Harbor Queen, which gives you a 40-minute tour of the Annapolis harbor as well as gorgeous views of the Naval Academy from the water.

Grab a seat at the prow of the ship or climb to the second level for a 360° view. The boat includes a section that’s protected from the weather on the first level and has a small snack bar there.

Tickets can only be purchased at the City Dock, which is right next to the boat itself. Tickets cost $16 for adults and $6 for kids ages 3 to 11, but check their web site for the most current ticket prices. Operating hours are seasonal and also posted on their web site.

Ghost Tour

We couldn’t possibly visit a place like Annapolis without taking a ghost tour. These historic old cities are perfect for them. We chose Annapolis Tours & Crawls, and selected their Walking Ghost Tour. This is a 90-minute walk through the city at night, but you’ll spend much more time listening to stories than you will walking. The total length of the tour is less than a mile.

We heard a fascinating mix of history with a personal touch, leaning towards the mysterious and supernatural. Tours are certainly appropriate for children as young as about 8 years-old. The stories truly aren’t frightening; it’s more that the children should be old enough to take an interest in the stories. Tours are offered every night at 8 pm, except for Friday and Saturday when two tours a day are available at 7 and 9 pm. Coupons are offered frequently, so check Groupon or other sites before purchasing tickets.

Annapolis is a perfect day trip from Washington, D.C. or Baltimore, Maryland! Enjoy your time exploring this beautiful little town.
