Fun Family Activity in Waco, Texas – The Dr Pepper Museum
My family has been passing through the doors of the Dr Pepper Museum for years, but until recently we had never actually toured it. That may sound strange until you realize that the old-fashioned soda fountain, located just inside the museum but before the ticket counter, was our chosen destination.
I admit (though my comrades around here will most likely make me wear scarlet letters DP) that I do not care for Dr Pepper, so I assumed there wouldn’t be anything in the museum to interest me. I also assumed, since this was a MUSEUM, that dragging my kids through it would be less than thrilling. For the good of Hilton Mom Voyage, though, I needed to venture in and at least get some pictures to write an article on this destination. What I found was a pleasantly surprising and fun family activity in Waco.
The Dr Pepper Museum is located in a 100-year-old, historic manufacturing and bottling building which makes the overall feel of the museum interesting. There are three floors in the museum, each offering its own charming glimpse into soda history. The set up of the exhibits, carefully protected by plexiglass and divided into many rooms by theme, make parents of little ones a little more at ease to let them explore without worry.
There are 1980’s and 1990’s era videos to watch if some in your party want more information on how they clean bottles that are re-used or what soda commercials from different decades looked like. There are games to play, like “guess which flavors are used in Big Red” and even a bead maze for the smaller visitors. When you purchase your tickets to the museum, be certain to pick up a scavenger hunt page that kids can use to find certain exhibits in each room.
As I mentioned earlier, the best part of the museum is the old-fashioned soda fountain. It’s worth stopping by the museum just for the Dr Pepper float (or in my case, Root Beer!) over Blue Bell vanilla ice cream. The only thing that can be said about this is YUM!
If you’ll be in Waco for a night or two, the Hilton Waco is a great option for a conveniently located hotel for your family activities. Located just a few blocks off of I-35 near the downtown area and Brazos River, it’s a great base of operations to see what Waco has to offer!
