Adrenaline Overload: Canyoning in the Southern Swiss Alps
The most amazing and adrenaline-pumping adventure of my family’s lives was booked online. It began with these instructions: “Take the train from Zurich to Tenero. Take the bus there towards Corippo, Bivio and this is your stop. From here, you walk down and then up the road for 100 meters and over the bridge, towards Corippo. We are parked there, on the side of the road, waiting for you.”
It sounds like something from a James Bond movie, but in reality, it was so much more exciting. It was an intense adventure, mystery, adrenaline rush, discovery of nature and self, physical challenge, plus a sprinkling of true fright and stunning natural beauty, all rolled into one. Simply electrifying!
Believe me when I tell you that there is nothing, at least in my life, that can compare to canyoning in the southern Swiss Alps. It was, by far, the most adventurous day of our lives and a truly unbelievable and memorable experience. Definitely a check-mark on the “bucket list” of life.
My kids are 12 and 14 and my husband is an active, “semi-oldie,” like me. Yes, we are a family of adventure seekers, and yes, this was the most adrenaline-pumping thing we’ve ever done. (And we’ve done some serious stuff like whitewater rafting, caving, paragliding and more.)
I’m not going to lie though. Every incredible adventure comes with somewhat of a price, which in this case was a significant physical challenge. This adventure was extremely challenging but also deeply fulfilling.
Our Canyoning Guides at Adreventura Ticino
The highly-skilled crew at Adreventura Ticino led us on this journey of epic proportions. And the breathtakingly-beautiful scenery (usually only seen by animals as humans can’t get into the canyon without all of the proper safety gear) made it worth every bit of the effort. Yes, every single bit.
I would definitely recommend their canyoning tour to anyone in good physical condition because these guides are experienced, safe and prepared. And, as I may have mentioned, this was, by all counts, the most amazing adventure of our lives. My family and I have never been so thrilled, challenged, focused and determined, and yet so awe-struck by extreme, natural surroundings. It was truly incredible!
The Trip to Valle Verzasca
Our canyoning journey began as we stepped into that large, white Adreventura Ticino van that was waiting for us on the side of the road, just over the little bridge. From there we drove further up the mountain and then suited up in our provided gear of wetsuits, booties and water boots, gloves and even helmets.
Soon we were walking up a very steep and winding road, through a quaint little village that looked like something out of a storybook. Then we “hiked” just a bit more through a dreamy little forest. Finally, at the point where I was basically convinced that I could no longer trek through the mountainside in a wetsuit, like a seal with legs, we stood there looking at the Valle Verzasca in all its splendid glory. It was magnificent.
Our Experience Canyoning in Switzerland
There really are no words to describe everything that came next. As native Floridians we were just so out of our element and all of our senses were on overload. This mountainous, wildlife-wonderland of a canyon was more beautiful and powerful than anything we’d ever seen — or conquered.
Once we made our way down into the canyon, we were racing down natural rock slides, bravely leaping off cliffs into pools of fresh and freezing mountain water (thank goodness for the wetsuits), shimmying through crevices and rappelling down huge canyon rock walls. It was incredible, to say the least, and a day we will never forget!
Needless to say, if you are a thrill seeker who likes active adventure, canyoning in the Swiss Alps is for you! I just can’t say it enough. This adventure is seriously “bucket list” material but definitely not for the faint of heart. This gem is best suited for the bold and brave, the adrenaline-junkie types.
If that’s you, go ahead. You really should do it. It’s crazy good, and I promise that Tristan and the folks at Adreventura Ticino will have you in good hands. Plus, they’ll give you the experience of a lifetime and one you will never forget!
