Kid-Friendly Excursions in Bimini: The Sapona Shipwreck
Bimini is a great place to snorkel! The waters surrounding the island are usually clear and calm, which makes seeing underwater creatures very easy. During our stay at Hilton Bimini, we visited the beach on property several times and saw something new at every visit. If your family wants to take its snorkeling adventures to the next level, I recommend an excursion to the Sapona shipwreck with Bimini Undersea. Here are five reasons why our family loved this excursion.
5 Reasons to Take a Bimini Snorkeling Excursion to the Sapona Shipwreck
1. It’s Safe
I will admit, I was suspicious about how “kid-friendly” this excursion would be. (It certainly doesn’t look very kid-friendly from the photos.) However, the captain assured me that this would be the best excursion to do in the unusually windy weather conditions we were experiencing. There were several diver guides on the trip with us. My daughters immediately connected with Nessa, the female master diver, who kept a close eye on them during the dive. Before we were allowed to jump in the water, she swam around the shipwreck to assess how strong the wind and currents were.
2. Guaranteed to see sea life
While safety was most important to me, my kids liked knowing that they would, without doubt, see some cool sea life. And even with the less-than-ideal conditions, we saw plenty of different species of fish, coral, and crustaceans during the hour-long tour.
3. It’s more weather tolerant
The weather in Bimini is usually ideal for boating excursions, but we happened to be there during hurricane season when there was wind and rain in the area. While we enjoyed fewer crowds, we also were unable to do some of the activities we had booked for the week due to the weather. While the other excursions had been canceled, the boat captain felt it was still possible to visit the shipwreck.
4. All Equipment is included
Everything you need to snorkel is provided on the boat and is included in the excursion: masks, snorkels, flotation vests and flippers. Tip: Bring your own snorkel equipment to Bimini. This will allow you to have equipment that’s already adjusted to your body so you can spend more time exploring and less time fiddling with equipment. It will also save you the cost of renting snorkeling equipment at the beach.
5. Knowledgeable Staff
Every member of the crew had grown up in the Caribbean and had in-depth knowledge of their island and its waterways. The captain advised us on which excursions to plan based on the weather, and Nessa told us stories about some of the sea life she has seen. We also got tips on where to eat delicious Bahamian food.
We were apprehensive at first about bringing our kids on this excursion, but our worries were quickly allayed by the competent and friendly staff. We hope to return to Bimini someday to go back to Sapona, as well as the excursions we missed.
