Best Zip Line in the Blue Ridge Mountains
If you’re looking for an extremely fun vacation experience, zip lining is your ticket. It has quickly become one of my family’s favorite outdoor adventures. In fact, I can go one step further to say that we actually seek out new zip line adventures for our vacation destinations because each of us absolutely LOVES it!
Maybe we love zip lining because of the adrenaline rush, the incomparable views or the feeling of taking flight. Or perhaps we enjoy the team building experience we can conquer together or the fact that zip lining consistently proves to be a great outdoor activity that’s not too strenuous for the kids. While I can’t pinpoint the exact reason for our ever-growing infatuation, one thing I do know is that zip lining is an incredibly awesome and totally unforgettable experience that’s suited for the entire family, and a great way to make some really fun vacation memories. Promise.
Okay, now that I’ve told you why we love it, let me tell you about the best place to zip line in Asheville, NC. (For our best zip line pick on Hawaii’s Big Island, check out my other article, Zip Lining on Hawaii Big Island.) If you happen to be visiting North Carolina, we highly recommend the Blue Ridge Experience offered by Navitat Canopy Adventures, and here are a few reasons why we think your family will love it too.
Epic Views of the Blue Ridge Mountains
I thought that driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway at 30 mph was spectacular, and it is, but zip lining through the mountains really ups the ante and takes things to a whole new level. I mean, have you ever wondered what it might be like to soar over the mountains like a bird in flight? Well, Navitat, which is a made-up word meaning “to navigate the forest habit,” offers an opportunity that is about as close as you can safely get to that feeling. Their Blue Ridge Experience is a mountaintop zip line adventure with the longest (more than 2/3 of a mile) and highest zip lines you’ll find in the southern United States and they are seamlessly integrated into a spectacular wilderness setting.
After getting suited up, we began our journey in a special 4×4, off-road van that took us up into the mountains and then we enjoyed small hikes through the woods to reach the zip lining platforms. After safely connecting to the zip lines, we took to heart the immortal words of the world-renown poet, E.E. Cummings, “I will take the sun in my mouth and leap into the ripe air.” And it was spectacular!
The 360° views of the Blue Ridge Mountains we experienced during flight were simply breathtaking and unlike anything we had even imagined. We were literally flying through the treetops and gazing out over magnificent mountain vistas…at speeds close to 60 mph! It was truly awesome, to say the least!
Great for Families
Everything is better with a friend, right? My family and I are huge fans of team-building adventure experiences. We embrace opportunities that entice us to be brave and bold, yet provide the comfort and encouragement of a shared family experience. For us, this zip lining adventure through the Blue Ridge Mountains was like a dream come true.
First of all, this adventure wasn’t too long or too strenuous and it provided the perfect amount of hiking exercise and excitement for our “bigger” kids (must weigh at least 70 lbs.) and for us too. The zip line equipment also had a handle bar set up and an automatic braking system that made this an easy and comfortable ride for all.
There were three different, massively long zip lines that allowed us to take off side-by-side, racing-style, which added a bit of that togetherness-type comfort and friendly competition, all rolled into one. Because there were three different and separate zip line rides, we had the opportunity to switch partners so that we were able to share the unique experience with each family member. Score!
As if my first two reasons may not have been enough, I have one more. Yes, aside from the one-of-kind views and the team-building environment, the folks at Navitat are on a mission to connect people with nature, and they embrace the responsibilities of conservation and environmental stewardship within their industry. The company employs a full-time plant ecologist, but every employee we encountered was safety conscious and environmentally educated.
Our experienced guides provided interesting information about the incredible natural setting that surrounded us, yet kept everything lighthearted and fun with their cheerful attitudes and unquenchable thirst for adventure. It was a top-notch experience on a multitude of levels, and they kept us smiling the entire time.
Because they’re awesome, Navitat Canopy Adventures has also been recognized by numerous media outlets, including CNN, Fox News, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and National Geographic, as a “must-do” attraction in the Asheville area. My clan just simply calls the experience, “Winning!” Give it a try. I’ll bet your family will feel like they’re winning too.
