Best Things to do in Savannah, GA with Kids
Savannah, GA has history, charm, food and good weather and is a great place to vacation as a family. Here are my family’s recommendations on places to stay and eat and the best things to do in Savannah, GA with kids.
Best Things to Do in Savannah, GA with Kids
Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
If you have a Girl Scout in your family, then you will want to visit the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low who was the founder of the Girl Scouts. The house is now run by the Girl Scouts of the USA as a historic museum and provides insight into Juliette’s childhood and the values of today’s Girl Scouts.
Forsyth Park is the largest city park in the historic district of Savannah. With a beautiful fountain, walking paths and a playground it makes a lovely stop for families while out sightseeing.
Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
A unique way to see the historic area of Savannah is a sightseeing tour by horse-drawn carriage. History comes alive as your tour guide shares stories and information while you “clip-clop” along past Savannah’s historic gems.
River Street is located on the riverfront and has a unique mixture of stores and restaurants. Although geared toward tourists, with cobblestone streets and the river view, it is a worth a stroll.
Where to Eat
The Pirates’ House
This is our family’s favorite restaurant in Savannah! The Pirate’s House is located in a historic building once used as an inn for seafarers. Now the rambling 15 rooms are used as dining rooms, with a few secret spots including a dungeon which is fun for the kids to explore. The menu is great for all ages and watch out as a pirate might even come by your table!
Paula Deen’s The Lady & Sons
The well-known Paula Deen and her sons have served up true southern cooking for 25 years in downtown Savannah at her restaurant, The Lady & Sons. For a sampling of everything southern, try the buffet with Georgia-style goodies like Southern Fried Chicken, BBQ Spareribs, Brunswick Stew, Baked Porky Beans, Creamed Corn and Banana Pudding. If you prefer, you can also order similar items off the menu.
J. Christopher’s is open for breakfast and lunch and is an ideal place to eat with kids. Located in the historic area right across the street from Hilton DeSoto, it is casual, convenient and delicious. They don’t take reservations and Sunday brunch can get crowded, but we think the Blueberry Crunchcakes are worth the wait.
Mellow Mushroom is a gourmet but casual pizza spot located in the downtown area just a block from Hilton DeSoto. If your family is craving pizza after a day of fun, this is an easy walk and all of the pizzas are delicious. The decor is definitely “mellow 70s” which is fun change of pace for kids after visiting historical sights.
There are so many great family attractions in this historic city, and these are just a few of my ideas on the best things to do in Savannah, GA with kids. Let me know if your family has any other favorite places in Savannah by mentioning them in the comments below.
