Best Things to do in Nicaragua with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Nicaragua is an up and coming destination that is ideal for nature-loving active families. There are beautiful beaches, mountains and even volcanoes. Here are some of the best things to do in Nicaragua with kids.

Hike Masaya, an Active Volcano

Nicaragua is one of the only places in the world where you can hike up and see an active volcano. Masaya Volcano National Park near Managua has erupted several times in the past, and today visitors can explore the two volcanoes and five craters. It’s one of the only places to see bubbling lava and the constant white smoke. While at the park, you can visit a museum for more information and also hike up the volcano and from crater to crater. This is a unique adventure and a great thing to do in Nicaragua with kids!

Surfing in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is known for its amazing surf conditions which are helped by the Lago de Nicaragua effect that creates offshore winds on the west coast for most of the year. As a result there are over 300 days a year of offshore winds and consistent swells for surfers of all abilities. This makes it a great place for experienced surfers and also a place where beginners can take lessons and try out surfing. If you don’t have a surfer in your family, you can still catch some waves on a boogie board!

Sand Dune Boogie Boarding

We had never heard of this before, but it is exactly what it sounds like. We were guided to an appropriate sand dune where we climbed to the top and rode down on boogie boards just like we were on sleds. Of course, just like sledding, the hardest part is climbing up the hill, but the ride down makes it all worth it!

Monkey Scouting

Nicaragua is known for a large monkey population, and we saw monkeys lounging in tree tops every day during our trip. We saw howler monkeys the most, but Nicaragua is also home to spider monkeys and white-faced monkeys. They did not approach us at all, but we had fun watching them in their habitat.

Horseback Riding

There are plenty of places to go horseback riding, but something about riding a horse in the morning on the beach with mountains in the background made for a particularly memorable experience in Nicaragua. Enjoying nature on a trail or beach ride is one of the best things to do in Nicaragua with kids.
