Best Things to do in Hilton Head Island with Kids
If you are looking for a beautiful and family-friendly beach along the Atlantic Ocean, Hilton Head Island, SC is the perfect choice. The small island near Savannah, GA has miles of beaches, plenty of paved bike paths, and numerous playgrounds. It’s easy to see why Hilton Head has been named one of the top 10 family beaches in the country. Here are some of the best things in Hilton Head Island with kids.
Playing at the Beach
If you are visiting Hilton Head Island, of course you will want to spend plenty of time playing in the sand and ocean. Depending on where you stay, you may have private beach access, but a popular public beach is Coligny Beach Park, near Coligny Circle. There is free parking here and it is close to a grocery store and restaurants if you need to pick up lunch or snacks.
Hilton Head is known as a biking destination and I highly recommend bringing or renting bikes while on the island. You can even rent carts or bike seats for kids who aren’t riding on their own yet. Although the island is only 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, there are hundreds of miles of bike paths and shared paths available. So wherever you want to go, you can get there by bike!
Visiting Harbour Town
Harbour Town is located at the southern end of Hilton Head Island in Sea Pines Plantation. Sea Pines is a gated area and I recommend paying the small fee (currently $6 per vehicle) for daily access so you can visit. Some of the best things to do in Harbour Town include viewing or even walking up the famous red and white lighthouse, looking at the yachts in the harbor, and playing on the climbing trees and Gregg Russell playground.
With numerous courts, good weather, and top-rated professionals and facilities, Hilton Head Island is known as a great place for tennis. If your game needs a little work, there are private lessons and group clinics available and my kids have also taken lessons at several locations. Some of the well-known tennis facilities include Smith Stearns Tennis Academy, Van Der Meer Tennis, Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center and Sea Pines Racquet Club.
Free Evening Entertainment
One of the best parts of family vacation is staying up a little later, and listening to music or watching a family show makes for a fun evening. Our favorite evening activity is listening to Gregg Russell perform in Harbour Town in Sea Pines. He has a show most weeknights in the summer which is free and always entertaining. Besides singing classic songs the whole family can sing along with, he invites kids to come up on stage and perform themselves!
Tip: Plan to stay through the evening in Harbour Town for a concert on the same day you pay the entrance fee to visit the lighthouse and play areas. Check the schedule to confirm performance dates.
Another long-time singer is Shannon Tanner who performs a free family-friendly show in Shelter Cove. Also, check out the schedule at Coligny Plaza where there is free entertainment every evening in the summer. Our favorite was the Magic Show and the kids even got to participate in a magic trick.
