Best Places to See Live Music in Austin, TX with Kids

Posted in Articles | by

Austin calls itself the “Live Music Capital of the World” and for good reason. Every night of the week, all over the city, you will find musicians performing. Enjoy and tip generously!

Some of the most iconic spots to catch a show may be off limits to minors (e.g., The Continental Club, the Saxon Pub, Antone’s, Hole in the Wall). However, there are more than a handful of excellent venues where the entire family can enjoy food, drinks and live music in Austin, TX. I did a little crowd-sourcing with my hip Austin friends and came up with this list of four local spots, all south of the river.

1. Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company

The ABGB, as it is affectionately called, is wildly popular with families offering pizza (including gluten-free options), salads, sandwiches and of course, beer and wine.  It’s dog-friendly, too. You can check out the scheduled musical entertainment on their web site. Closed Mondays.

2. Maria’s Taco Xpress

Maria’s is a great spot for inexpensive, but tasty tacos and live music, especially on Sunday. This long-time South Austin favorite offers a “Gospel Bunch” from noon to 2 pm. Live music is also performed on Friday nights. You can dine inside or on the expansive two-level deck, and there are often vendors selling unique gifts from Mexico and beyond.

3. Guero’s Taco Bar

Guero’s is a classic staple on the ever-popular South Congress Avenue. Bill Clinton even ate here back in the day, and I have seen more than a few celebrities chowing down on simple, but tasty Mexican food. Ironically, my favorite item on the menu is the Guero’s salad. Directly next door to the restaurant is an outdoor performance area/stage that offers live music several nights a week. The area is fenced in and a great place for families with picnic tables and bar.

4. Nutty Brown Cafe

If you are willing to drive 30 minutes or so south of Austin towards the community of Dripping Springs, you will be rewarded with a pretty authentic Hill Country experience. Nutty Brown Cafe is a gathering place for families, especially on the weekends, to enjoy live music outdoors in a super relaxed environment. Every Sunday, the Nutty Brown hosts a live jazz brunch. Children under three do not require tickets. For more information about shows at this venue and how to purchase tickets, visit their website.

Hilton Austin is just a quick 10-minute ride from most of these great places to see live music in Austin, TX.
