Best Destinations for Spring Travel
Every city has its glory season, the time of year when a city shows its best self and its residents are most proud to welcome visitors. In my hometown, Atlanta, I think that autumn is the season in which visitors can truly see the city at its best, and enjoy its temperate weather, Southern hospitality and myriad of festivals and events.
This notion got me thinking, When is the best time to visit other U.S. cities? I posed the question to some of my fellow writers, and their answers were interesting and even a little surprising. If you’re seeking some destinations for spring travel, keep reading to learn about two U.S. regions you should consider. Later in the year, we’ll post two other great city destinations to visit in the autumn months, Atlanta and San Francisco.
The Beaches of Northeast Florida
From Susan K
One of the best times to visit the beaches of Northeast Florida is in the spring when you can enjoy good weather, avoid the crowds, and have the chance to attend the well-known golf tournament, The PLAYERS Championship.
While other parts of the country are still experiencing highs in the 50s and chilly lows in the 40s even in May, the average temperature on the “First Coast” (as in the first area in Florida to be colonized by Europeans) in April and May is in the high 70s and low 80s. April and May are also two of the driest months in the area. This is perfect weather for walking and sunbathing on the beaches of St. Augustine, or playing golf or tennis in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Most families have to plan family vacations around school schedules, which means only visiting the beach in the summer months. But if you have the flexibility to travel for even a weekend in April or May, you will be rewarded with easy access to chairs at the hotel pool at Hilton St. Augustine Historic Bayfront, where you will also enjoy plenty of room to run and play at the beach, and shorter waits at family restaurants.
If you are a golf fan, you won’t want to miss the The PLAYERS Championship, which is held each year in May at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach. The tournament attracts some of the biggest players and has the largest purse on the PGA tour. It’s also known as a great spectator event with plenty of venues to eat and drink and a kids’ zone for when children need a break.
The First Coast in Northeast Florida is a wonderful place to visit year-round but don’t miss it in the spring!
San Diego, California
From Mary S
San Diego is an ideal place to visit all year with our mild weather and many family-friendly attractions and beaches, but I recommend spring as the best time to visit. It’s less crowded and hotel rooms are a bit cheaper.
Flowers, Flowers Everywhere
The Carlsbad Flower Fields in north San Diego are a must-see visit between March and May. The hillside near Legoland is filled with giant Ranunculus flowers and erupts in stunning rows of color overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Kids can ride tractors, play in a sweet pea blossoms maze, visit whimsical playhouses and giant mushrooms, and go sluice mining.
Balboa Park, the nation’s largest cultural park, explodes in colors, especially the cherry blossoms at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is also worth a day trip between March and April to see the spectacular display of colorful wildflowers. Just call the hotline beforehand for the bloom status.
Natural Springtime Spectacles
San Diego is also a prime spot to see gray whales on their southbound migration from Alaska to Baja’s warmer waters. Several whale watching tours are available to see these amazing creatures up close from early December to late April. It’s also a great time to go on bay cruises for a different perspective of the city.
Visitors can also witness thousands of tiny, silver fish called grunions mate during full moon at La Jolla Shores or through Birch Aquarium’s guided trips in early March. See the schedule here for the Grunion Runs.
San Diego’s close proximity to Mexico and the city’s rich history makes Old Town San Diego one of the best places in the country to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5), a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. As its name suggests, Hilton San Diego Bayfront has amazing views of the San Diego Bay, and is conveniently located to downtown and the San Diego Convention Center.
