A Christmas Story Comes Home in Hammond, IN

Posted in Articles | by

Ever since I was little, watching A Christmas Story has been annual holiday tradition for my family. My brother would watch it over and over again during the holidays. Funny thing is, I never got sick of it. Now that I have my own family, we have created the tradition of making homemade popcorn and watching it after Christmas dinner every single year. It is something we all look forward to.

You can imagine how happy I was when we found out that A Christmas Story Comes Home exhibit was located right next to the restaurant where we happened to be eating on our way through Hammond, Indiana. (The town of Hammond, just 30 minutes south of Chicago, is also the hometown of the story’s author and the place on which the setting of the movie is based.) We just had to check it out. For our family, it was a major event!

What You Will See and Experience at this Special A Christmas Story Exhibit

The exhibit is located in the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, IN through December 31, and admission is completely free.

Outside there is a statue of Flick, taking on the triple dog dare! Poor guy is still stuck to that pole.

Outside A Christmas Story Comes Home at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, there is a statue of Flick, taking on the triple dog dare!

Inside there are six animatronic displays that recreate the best scenes from the movie. Of course there are several tributes to “The Lamp.”

You can’t miss “The Lamp” in the window at A Christmas Story Comes Home!

Don’t forget to visit Santa Mountain to get a picture with the big guy himself. Don’t worry, you get to go down the slide on your own, no help from Santa’s foot on this mountain.

On select Saturdays, they play the movie A Christmas Story in their 100-seat theater at 2 and 4 pm. All throughout December they have special events and activities, such as Mommy’s Little Piggy Mashed Potato Eating Contest, an Ugly Lamp Contest and the Oh Fuuuudge! Relay Race.

Don’t skip the gift shop when you visit, it’s full of one-of-a-kind A Christmas Story merchandise. If you are fan of the movie then A Christmas Story Comes Home is a must-see and, best of all, FREE attraction in Northern Indiana.
