6 Family-Friendly USO Airport Lounges
The United Service Organizations (USO) defines their mission of connection as strengthening America’s military service members by “keeping them connected to family, home, and country” throughout their service to the nation. Across the country, USO airport lounges provide services without charge to military personnel, retirees and their families.
Our family has been rescued more times that I can count by USO airport lounges across the U.S. During delayed and canceled flights or what seem like never-ending layovers, the generous and kind volunteers who run the USO airport locations always help make our family’s travels so much more enjoyable and pleasant.
The list below provides some information on some of the largest, most family-friendly USO airport lounges at a few of the biggest and busiest U.S. airports across the nation. We have been guests at each of these, and I can personally attest to how great each one of them is.
Our Favorite USO Airport Locations
Denver International Airport
This USO lounge occupies a large area that was previously an airline lounge. It has separate areas for kids to play and also a quiet area for sleeping. The USO lounge is located inside TSA security in Concourse A on the 3rd floor and is open from 5 am until 10 pm. Just relaxing in the oversized leather recliners here is worth the stop, with or without kids in tow!
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
The DFW airport USO lounge has a great snack bar area that often has local treats like gigantic cinnamon rolls donated by a local bakery. You also always find Dunkin’ Donuts coffee ready for you to pour. Sometimes it can get crowded downstairs, but they have extra seating upstairs, too. The USO lounge is located inside TSA security near Gate B14 and is open from 8 am until 10:30 pm.

Philadelphia International Airport
This large USO lounge has a separate kids’ area plus beds and showers (stocked with toiletries, towels and shower shoes) if you happen to get stuck in the airport overnight. They also offer a hot breakfast every morning. Thanks to the countless hours that volunteers provide, this USO lounge is open 24 hours a day. It is located inside TSA security in Terminal A East, adjacent to Gate A6 (ride the elevator to the 2nd floor).
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
This 3,200 square-foot USO lounge was recently renovated in the summer of 2015. It has a big, open area for eating, drinking and watching shows plus a dedicated kids’ corner. This USO lounge is located outside security, so plan extra time to get through security to your gate. Go to the main terminal atrium, take the elevator or escalator located near the clock tower up to the 3rd floor of the atrium, and the USO is located in Suite 320. The USO lounge has varying hours by day: Monday through Friday 7 am to 9 pm, Saturdays 7 am to 6 pm, and Sundays 7 am to 8 pm.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
The Bob Hope Hollywood USO lounge at LAX is one of the finest state-of-the-art USO lounges in the world. Open 24/7, this comfortable and welcoming safe haven for troops and their families is located on the Arrivals (lower) level of LAX directly across the roadway and between Terminals One and Two. It is the perfect place to hang out when you have a significant layover at LAX, especially for international or Hawaiian connections.
The 4,000 square-foot lounge offers its famed Hollywood Canteen snack bar; a big screen TV lounge with a library of thousands of Hollywood’s current and classic films; the General Jimmy Doolittle Lounge and free lending library; a full-service computer center with Internet access; a Disney inspired family room; a nap room with leather recliners; plus men’s and women’s restrooms and showers. The lounge also features a large display area honoring famed comedian and USO entertainer Bob Hope, complete with some of his stage uniforms, photos, awards and other memorabilia.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport
O’Hare actually has two different USO lounges. The lounge in Terminal 2 is open 24 hours a day and is located outside of security so plan a little time if you are visiting this location. The Terminal 3 lounge is located inside security on the Mezzanine Level of the Rotunda, G Concourse, and is open from 6 am until 10:30 pm. Both lounges offer a kitchenette stocked with snacks and beverages and a dining area. They also feature a big screen TV, movie rentals, books, magazines, board games, a children’s playroom, and a quiet reading space.

What is the USO?
The USO is not part of the Federal government. It is a Congressionally chartered, private organization, which relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities. The USO is also powered by volunteers to accomplish their mission. Please visit the USO website if you’re interested in making a donation or volunteering at a USO center or event near you.
And when visiting, there is always a basket or jar for donations at the front desk where they check your Military ID and you sign in. While everything inside is complimentary, please give back if you can, regardless the amount!
And if you happen to get stuck at the airport due to a delayed or canceled flight or have a layover in a city where the USO is not open all night, remember that Hilton offers a fantastic military family rate.
